It's the same thing as speaking in front of an audience. Many seemingly confident people are terrified of this. It just takes practice. Try to convince yourself that you don't care what they think. I know that's harder than it sounds. I'm a singer/guitar player in a local band. I, too, had to get over the same stuff that you're talking about. I used to be terrified before a show, but now, I could give a crap what everybody else thinks about it. Just do your thing. If they like it, they like it. If not... F**k 'em.

I was nervous before a show once, in front of a very large crowd, and the bass player in my band gave me the best advice anyone has ever given me.

"F#@$ it, just go for it."

One other thing that helps...when you're away from the guitar, try to visulize the fret board and exactly what you will be playing...seeing your fingers on the strings etc.

The only person who will shut them up is you. Most of the famous and influential guitar players are classically trained...So try learning some simple hooks from a bach tune and see where it takes you.

Also...a hybrid of rock/percussive/classical stylings that I thoroughly enjoy is a duo from Mexico named
"Rodrigo y Gabriela"

I HIGHLY suggest giving them a listen, they may just change your mind!

Good Luck!

Let us hope you play guitar better than you express yourself in the written word.

Because you have a level of expertise now, concentrate on that and build up your confidence in front of others, regardless what genre of music you should play.
