Doesn't that require believing in him Jon M? That's completely circular.

I'll know him when I meet him, and to meet him, I must believe in him?

Only one: you open yourself up to meeting Him in your heart. No tautology there. You meet Him, you believe in Him because you met Him. That's the only way.

I think Jon M illustrates the point perfectly. In order to meet God, you must "open up your heart" to him. In other words, you have to believe in God in order to meet him. Then, by meeting him, you will believe in him. Perfect tautology.
Faith requires circular logic.

The same sort of question could be addressed to belief in the physical world. Consider Descartes, Husserl, "the Matrix", etc. Maybe Hume, too.
The way out of doubt in the physical world is extra-logical. If you are hit in the head hard enough with a 2x4, it disables your ability to doubt the existence of the world. The "proof" here isn't in the reasoning, but in the opacity of the experience. As Wittgenstein said, "Not HOW the world is, is the mystical, but THAT it is." Though his manner of expression is a bit arcane, he makes a good point. All of our knowledge of the world is descriptive of its attributes, but has nothing compelling to say about whether it's really there.

If I ever become religious it will be completely non-tautologically: I wish more Christians understood this.

There is the non-knowing-what- tautological-means method of nodding on command and hating who they tell you to. Easier than plastic dishes.

Well, you could travel back in time and become one of his apostles. Then we could have the Book of Scrubs.
