Simple: Most writers want what they do not have, or try to become all they are not.

I'm assuming you mean the sort of trashy, heaving-bosom white globes fever pitch romances with studly pirates and busty dames with flowing hair on the cover.

I've never read about a kaleidoscope in the 20 or so "romances" I've read. As a writer my educated guess is that:

1) It's a swirly, hard-to-define beautiful experience. Sex might be described like that, I suppose.
2) Many writers are lazy or get trapped employing over-used similies and metaphors. Since this sort of reading material isn't really what one might call "quality literature," hackneyed cliches (which is one, ironically) abound.

By the way, I learned a lot from those kinds of books about how to please a woman in bed, so men, take heed. Just don't get addicted or you'll be subject to endless derision from your peers.

i dont get it. maybe if the couple is on acid.

Kaleidoscope is usually used to describe an overkill of shapes and colors.

"after getting hit on the head, he felt like he was looking into a Kaleidoscope"

maybe if your drunk at an orgy.

i suppose if you wore wild colors and changed positions quickly enough.

I've never heard this term before, but I've not read many romance novels, I find them ridiculous. But, think about a kaleidoscope, colorful and changing, and sorta frenzied, I guess sex could be construed that way. (well except for the colorful part, unless you're having sex with a clown)
