I am terrified of being happy. Any time things are going good, I immediately expect the bad is following right behind. Are you like this too? I'm an atheist, please don't tell me to pray the psychosis away.

Sometimes I have had to deal with this.
It is called anticipation. It's just a natural occurrence of a thought in our minds. We compare happy times and sorrowful times and we can recognize that sometimes it seems we have little or no control over events that influence our feelings, and that can cause us anxiety. Sometimes we have to just make the best of things and not obsess over things, right?

Sometimes it helps to think of inspirational quotations or sayings to make things better in our minds and lives.

You may be or say you are an atheist, but you are also a person, worthy of being helped in time of mental or emotional crisis. So, I hope something I've said has helped, and if so, thanks for letting me help. :)

I used to be like that... I wanted to be a happy person but as soon as I would start to be something else would go wrong. I think if we always expect something to go wrong though it will. There will always be bad things in life but once I started looking at the positive things life got better. I mean sure I still have bad things happen but I just have to tell myself that I can get through them and move on with life. I know that it is not easy. You may want to consider some counselling... it really helps some people.

I'm like, totally with you, and I'm a devout Christian.

Some say it's a sign of depression.

I always like going uphill, climbing, riding a bike, etc., because the downhill thing means it's over. I've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, only because when life is going great, which is often because I work hard at it, climbing uphill all the time, I prepare for the inevitable fall.

We just need to keep climbing, keep something we are shooting for, for that is also a sign of a successful person. Think of all the geniuses throughout the ages and their temperaments.

You will probably contribute much to society, even though you may not feel like it.

I know exactly what you are experiencing. I know you are an atheist, so I will respect that and not tell you to pray (it worked for me though). I hope that you are able to get through this. Just stay positive and don't think about anything bad happening. I know this is difficult as the mind just tells us all types of crazy stuff.

You are a pessimist. When you start thinking of the negative, tell yourself to focus on the positive. If you have to, make a list of all the good things that can happen and carry it with you to remind you. Eventually, it will become habit to focus on the good, but it will take time and effort.

I don't know how to answer your question...I would also say that sometimes, I feel as if things are too good to be true...and something bad does happen....but no, I am not atheist....and I do pray...and well.....it helps...prayer has done many miracles for me...but well...can I ask you what you believe in....if you are atheist?? where will we be when we die?? who created this universe??

The bad *is* following right behind :p That's life. Ups and downs, twists and turns.. just relax and enjoy the moment, and try to not fear the inevitable: change.

maybe that's a good thing. always expecting the worst means when it comes, it won't hit you as hard. also, when good things come along, they'll have more of a positive effect.

You don't have to be scared of the "bad" times as long as you believe in your ability to get through them.
