Catnip is a member of the mint family. It is safe for cats. As matter of fact, cats need a little bit of greens now and then. A cat under seven months probably won't respond to it, but once they're old enough, a little goes a long way and it's really fun!

In addition to some of the excellent answers already given, you should know that about 40% of cats are uneffected by and uninterested in cat nip. Also, cats can have different reactions to it. Some like to roll in it, some like to lick it, my male cat gets very sleepy, one of our clinic cats get very grumpy so we don't let her have any - we call her a "mean drunk." It is safe for your cat. They cannot "overdose" on it. It's self-limiting. Think of it this way: You walk into a bakery. The bread smells so good and you really want it, but eventually you get used to the smell and it doesn't have the same effect. That's basically how the cat nip works if you're worried about them having too much.

Hello Janine S,

Yes catnip is perfectly safe for your cat here is some information I have gathered for you.

"Catnip and catmints are mainly known for their behavioral effects they have on cats, particularly domestic cats. Catnip has a sharp, biting taste, . Approximately two thirds of cats are susceptible to the behavioral effects of catnip,

When cats sense the leaves or stems of catnip, they may roll over it, paw at it, chew it, lick it, leap about and purr, Some cats will also growl and meow. This reaction only lasts for a few minutes before the cat loses interest. It takes up to two hours for the cat to "reset" after which it can come back to the catnip and have the same response as before. Young kittens and older cats are less likely to have a reaction to catnip. Lions and tigers are also sensitive to the effects of catnip."
Hope that this helped answer your question.
Feel free to email me with any other questions.
Regards. =^..^=

Catnip is a herb, also called Cat mint that cats (both great and small) seem to be attracted to. There are no side effects other than making your cat slightly energetic. (Not suggested for already very active cats.) Don't worry if your cat doesn't really react to it because some cats are immune to catnip totally. You can get it as a herb or spray.

It's weed for kitties, some don't like it, and some can't get enough. What's better than bubbles is buying real live cat nip, and planting it in your garden.. Your yard will be the fave place for all the neighborhood kitties!

Catnip is an herb from the mint family (as others have said) which affects cats similar to how marijuana affects humans, but without the long-term effects.

Not all cats get "high" from catnip, but it's perfectly safe.
