If you are going to ask the question you really should state some more of the facts. The other children hung nooses from the tree so they brought the past to the present! Do you think that it they should have been punished or that was just fine?

He was out of the hospital in TWO HOURS!
"After two hours of treatment and observation for a concussion and an eye that had swollen shut, Barker was released from the hospital. He was able to attend his school's Ring ceremony that evening, though he later testified that he left early due to pain."
Now, does that sound like attempted murder to you? Heck no! That sounds like boys who were angry because they sat under a tree and the next day some racist loon put three nooses above it!
I agree that the boys should be punished. I also believe that the boy who put the nooses on the tree should also be punished for a hate crime. But in no way do I feel anyone, anyone, should be going to prison!
Just so you know. Six teens would not have beat up my child because my son would not be out. His butt would have ALREADY been in the hospital the day I found out that he did such a horrible thing because I whooped him! Haha. He also would have had to write apology letters to all of the boys and their families involved. I don't care if you're 15, 16, 17 or 91 racism [the original that started this mess] should NOT be tolerated. By the time I was done with him he would be too scared to ever say a racist thing while living under my roof ever again.

Here is a section of the story from that link: "Jena's racial tensions were aggravated in August 2006, when three white teens hung the nooses the day after a group of black students received permission from school administrators to sit under the tree -- a place where white students normally congregated....Although Washington acknowledged that the FBI and other investigators thought the noose incident bore the markings of a hate crime, a decision was made not to press federal charges because the case didn't meet federal criteria. The students were under 18 and had no prior records, and no group such as a Ku Klux Klan was found to be behind their actions....On December 4, about three months after the nooses were discovered, six [black] teens, dubbed the Jena 6, were accused of beating [a] classmate. The six were originally charged with attempted second-degree murder and conspiracy."
What they failed to mention was that a group of white kids also jumped two black students before the "Jena 6" had their fight.
Should they be punished? They broke the law and yes they should. Is the punishment harsh and seemingly unfair? Yes I think so. Oh and BTW, I am a white Southerner that has grown up here so dont think I am being prejudiced or whatever. This has been blown up out of proportion by the media and by the NAACP. The white kids that hung the nooses should have been dealt with harshlier and some jail time should be served by the Jena 6. I think that they have been in jail, so I say time has been served. Let them out, give them a record, and get on with your life.

Haven't read the article yet, but yes if 6 kids jumped my child then the brats should be punished, though my daughter, wtih a combonation of my temper, her fathers temper and martial arts since 3 years old, can pretty much handle herself, 6 to 1 is still a really tough situation but yeah they should be punshied and hope like hell that the parents don't get ahold of them.
_____
After reading the story. Yes they should still be punshied just b/c they are black doens't mean they should get away with it. REverse the situation 6 white teens beat up a black one, wow talk about people crying for the teens to stay in prison then.
Still goes back to the 6 against 1.

I think they should definately be punished. The whole thing is ridiculous. If they hurt this boy, it really doesn't matter what color they are. If the situation was reversed between colors, you better bet they would be rallying for the life sentence on the children in question. I don't believe all black people feel the way these people do. I think people like al sharpton don't want equality, they want superiority. That is just my opinion. I have a friend who is black and she agrees with me.

The children who hung the nooses should be punished. They did something horrible and wrong. But that doesn't give the other children the right to take physical action. If it hurt them then they should have turned it in or presses charges. The people marching for freeing the Jena 6 are just telling their children that it's ok to use violence to solve a problem. Those six kids could have killed that one kid and that is unforgivable. It could have been dealt with in a better way, so yes they deserve to be punished and brought up on charges of attempted murder. Race had nothing to do with it.

Race totally excluded - OF COURSE THEY SHOULD BE PUNISHED!!! Why would you even have to ask that question? If anyone hurt my child, you can bet I would be pressing charges so fast their heads would swim!!! A fair fight is one thing but when it is 6 against 1 the odds are ridiculous.

If one child beats up another child they should evaluate the sitution properly what caused this to happen and the child should be repermanded but more than one should be repermanded just the same. One person might not think as clearly and think it is okay he made me mad or anger. But when it is more than one, one of them should atleast have the decentsy to say hay this isn't fair. This isn't right. Fighting is not okay and 6 on one is not fair.

if they are involved they deserve it-( purple, green, black or white) even if the one kid deseved getting his butt kicked-- these kids are old enough to know right from wrong ,and walk away, when there is going to be fight-
when i was young- we fought one on one. its gotten' out of hand- "wanna be gang thugs"- they think they are all bad *** until they hit the prison and realize that their new name is "Sheila"-and they are in with "Big Bubba"
I think they all deseve to stay in jail "if" they were there and partisipated in the beating.
I AM NOT FOR FREEING ANY THAT WERE INVOLVED- THEY ALL KNOW WHAT THEY WERE DOING AND IF COUGHT- THEY WILL HAVE TO FACE THEIR PUNISHMENT!

Interesting turn of events. The kid who was beat up was not one of the one who hung the nooses. I don't think there has been anything racist in the justice system in this case. Yes it was horrible that there were nooses, but the black kids shouldn't get off scot free simply because they're black and they got angry.
Also, Jesse Jackson is a disgrace to the black race.
