I don't know about "sniif-ing" around, but most mammals want to make their presence known by "planting" a bit of themselves in an area where they are bound to get noticed. A lot of scents in the area means a high-traffic zone, which means there are more dogs around to "get the message", which isn't necessarily, "I own this turf", because dogs are social animals.

It's sort of the same reason why women wear perfume, and men drive shiny gas-guzzlers. Remember when kids put baseball cards in the spokes of their bicycle wheels? It was to get noticed! Now, teens do the same thing with excrutiatingly loud muzak blasting from their car stereos! Same as with poo! Seriously! ;)

I think they need to smell which places are good for pooping. They would usually find places where they smell similar scents (other dogs's urine or feces). Dogs are very clean and they don't want to poop at their own space, so they would need to sniff to find other places to poop.

Sniffing around is adding up to that great moment of excitement before launch.
