The best places to go for a reference is a teacher (best is in a field related to your intended college major or career goal), sports coach, religious leader, work/job supervisor, volunteer coordinator for a group you volunteer with, or school activities advisor. An idea is to include how long they have known you, your character, how they know you, your good qualities, community involvement, achievements within the group, etc. The best idea is to use it on official letterhead when possible to add credibility.

Example:

Dear scholarship committee:

My name is Jane Smith, and I am the senior (2007) class advisor at Lincoln High School. Katilyn Jones has been an excellent student council representative for her homeroom since her freshman year at our school. She is a great help at our fundraising activities and full of ideas to improve the school or raise more funds. Some of her past ideas have included a t shirt sale during spirit week, rose sale at the senior prom last year, and a candle sale. I always look forward to the next meeting and hearing about her next fundraising opportunity for her graduating class.

Sincerely,

Jane Smith

They should write about your qualities, what activities you are involved in and why you deserve this scholarship
