It's very real. Whenever the poo poo hits the fan on the show, the featured cops usually goes right into cop mode instead of "the reality show liaison" personality that you see while they are driving around talking about their job and the area they work in.

I have been watching the show since it's beginnings in the 80s when cops were smoking in front of the camera and then Sgt. John Bunnell was still "playing tag" with the drug dealers. One thing I have never seen was a cop look at the camera and say "Did you get that?" or tell a suspect "Look, these guys got you on tape doing that, so quit lying."

It is pretty real.

To Sensible: Those parts are reality. You get into the mindset to get these guys and don't think about turning off the siren. The thing about the yelling get down after they are down is from training. The one thing that is reinforced in all training is to give verbal commands. The command to 'get down' or 'get on the ground' or 'give me your hands' is what is used in the training and when you are in a high stress situation you revert back to your training.

A funny story: During pressure point training one recruit was using the verbal command 'Grab your balls" as a joke during the training and the instructor let it go. This was a four hour training class. Months later this same recruit, now a deputy, had to use some pressure point controls and reverted back to his training telling the guy that wouldn't let go of his wife's hair to "Grab your balls, grab your balls!!" The suspect was cuffed and placed in the back of my car and he asks "What the hell is that guy's problem?"

Cops is created through months of filming. Things like that don't happen all the time. They take the most extreme cases and put them on t.v. In most cases you would be watching cops giving speeding tickets and filing reports.

Often I'm aware that the cop is very aware of the camera. I suppose that affects his behavior. Some are far more gentlemanly and courteous than seems likely, others more macho and harsh.

Guess which group has doubts about their manliness.

Yes it's real. You think American cops are harsh, have you ever seen Russian cops? Those guys are crazy. Talk about brutality...

I believe the camera has an effect on what you see. I am sometimes amazed though at some of the things they do for "effect" such as leaving the siren on or yelling "get on the ground" repeatedly when the suspect is already on the ground.

Those are the nice cops. Most people in the US are taugh to say "yes sir, no sir" and cooperate with the police. People who don't understand this usually get clubbed.
