I'm not really sure what the best grain is to use I'm guessing the different grains have to do with the speed of the bullet, how far it travels and things of that nature. I think the grains range from 150-180 for a 30-30 so just looking for someone that knows a bit more about it. My gun is from Western Field . Thanks in advance.

Most of the factory ammo I see for the 30-30 is 150-170 grain soft point.R_P is usually 170 grains, The silver tip Winchesters are really excellent cartridges for a 30-30 BTW..

However if you hand load you can pick from a variety of suitable bullets from 150 grain on up, the heavier the bullet, the lower your muzzle velocity. If you hand load and the ammo is for a lever gun, be sure to crimp your case/bullets, and be sure to pay strict attention to Overall length, so you will not have any feed problems. Remember, soft points are mandatory in a lever gun with a tube magazine unless you are single loading the cartridge.

Deer Hunting
If I had the choice of using 150 grain that could make one hole groups at 100 yards or 170-180 grain that made 3 inch groups at 100 yards ---- I'm taking the heavy bullet all day long.

Antalope hunting --- be a little different. You can get by with 150's with them.

Every Major Ammunition Manufacturer have web sites here on the Internet. Since there are variables involved may I suggest you check a few of these out for the information you request. They each have ballistic charts for the individual calibers of ammunition and will show you muzzle velocity, kinetic energy in pounds, bullet drops at specific ranges as well as the different bullet types and their applications. The 30-30 caliber Rifle Bullets are the most popular Deer hunting cartridge in history. It has many variations in factory ammunition and is still incredibly popular today as it has been for years. Your Western Field Rifle was manufactured under contract with Marlin Firearms Company, again known for it's lever action guns......

Both 150 and 180 are good; the 150 is a smidgen faster and good for antelope; the 180 is a teensy bit bigger and better for deer. I have seen some 130's that move right along and would probably be okay for antelope or varmints.

you have asked the incorrect question. definite, a 30-06 with a hundred and eighty+ grain bullets can kill a grizzly. it is likewise the case that a grizzly with a 220 grain bullet in him can kill you. smart human beings use something like 338 Winchester Magnum, 9.3x62, or 450 Alaskan to have some side in making helpful the 1st happens without the 2d.

Ballistic charts and opinions of gun cranks bedamned! Don't ask us! Ask your rifle!

Get a box of as many different loadings as you can find. Fire a couple of 5-shot groups, cleaning when you change loads. Measure all the groups, and see which load shot the smallest group.

Then go buy three or four boxes of that ammo from the same store you bought your test ammo.

In general, the lighter the bullet the greater the velocity, the heaver it is, the slower it gets.If you want to get the most energy transferred to the target, you would use the heavier bulleted loads.
