I suggest if you go to Delta Connection Academy, to go straight there without a degree. You will get a CFI and flight train until your hours are high. then you have an interview with the airlines.

If you go to a college, the best 4 year universities are:

University of North Dakota (www.und.edu)
&
Embry Riddle Aeronautical University (www.erau.edu)

You will start with regionals and hopefully get to your aircraft, but it's a hard journey and low pay.

good luck!

I go to an aviation college in Canada, and my program is specified to be a bush pilot up north when i graduate. Going with a degree in aviation, you cant go wrong. You get much more hands on materials and learning without the stress of a flight school knowing you have to pay for every second you are in the aircraft. The aviation college route is still very specialized, but if you are committed, then you should have a problem. Flight school is too pricey, and you dont have that degree for the rest of your life.

Good luck with that... Lots of people graduate with degrees in aviation. Many are out there now, working at little airports teaching people how to fly and flying last-minute corporate charters in order to build their hours before they can start in the big leagues. Some are only making $25-30K a year.

But if you're interested, go search for Northwestern Michigan College, Lansing Community College, Western Michigan University, or Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. All have aviation programs, and should be able to make you a freshly minted aviation instructor, with multi-engine and instrument ratings. The hard part - the chance to get to fly for a major carrier - is up to you.

A fairly decent college is Cochise College. http://www.cochise.edu/deptsdirs/aviation/ You'll probably save a bit more then most of the bigger names.

As everyone else is saying (and I agree with them) a flying career is not for the faint at heart right now. You need to have a good work ethic and be persistent. It is possible so don't give up if it's what you really want to do. I'd highly recommend getting the book called "Job Hunting for Pilots" by Greg Brown ( http://www.amazon.com/Job-Hunting-Pilots-Networking-Professional/dp/156027624X/ref=sr_1_4/104-4945495-1323928?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1190328125&sr=1-4 ). It is very good for helping you and if you think it's only for when you start looking for a job... you are wrong. You need to read it and apply what it says starting now. The sooner you do the better off you will be later on down the road.

Also check out Purdue University. Not many people mention that aviation program but it is a very good one. I went there received my private certificate in 2004 and as of this past may i started flying for a regional airline just 2 weeks after i graduated. Check it out or contact me if you want some more info.

You will start at Delta Connection and be on regionals for years before you 'upgrade' to an MD-80 or 90. And you will make around 20K per year.
