Body piercings don't "influence" me. Body piercings are not conscious beings. They don't perform action. Rather, I influence my body piercings, since I choose to get them.
Roughly 18% of today's teens have a piercing other than their earlobes. So, it's a decent chunk of the population, but certainly still a minority.
If you want them, like them, and take care of them, there isn't really any negative aspect to body piercing, besides what other people may think. But anyone who is mature enough to know what they want and like probably doesn't give a sh*t what some idiot on the street thinks about their decisions.
So, I guess in that case, there's nothing bad about them at all. :)

Honestly I think that body piercing has influenced alot more than just teens in the past few years.
They have become more common and something done just as much by upper-class teen girls as they are by anybody else. The piercings themselves may be different, but it's the same effect.
There are many more workplaces now that don't mind if you have facial piercings because of it, which blows me away.
I live in an area that has alot of more expensive returaunts and you'd be amazed to see how many people work there who have piercings and tattoos. Granted, that's not really a high paying job, but just a few years ago expensive resturaunts wouldn't dream of hiring someone as a server or hostess who had anything visible pierced other than earlobes.
They're now common place and that's making them more generally acceptable to society - even if they still aren't quite "the norm".
Piercings are a great, liberating form of self-expression for young and old people alike. Not unlike tattoos in that... but piercings aren't permanent; you can always take the jewelry out and no one is the wiser.

I get pierced because I want to. A lip ring is like a necklace to me. I can change it, I can not wear it if I don't want to, and there's many different styles of them. It's is a bit of a fad, but what isn't? And it's not really self expression to me either. How can it be self expression when everybody has the same thing? For me, my piercings are just more decoration.

they're a way of expression...though, i do think people sometimes go over board, just like tattoos....but hey, it's their bodies and if they're ok with not getting a high paying job or having to find a way of covering them up, then whatever. i personally don't like facial piercings. a small nose ring or lip ring or labret is as far as i really care for, but i stress SAMLL AND FEW. The eyebrow looks creepy to me, and honestly, why ruin a good face with metal?
