I don't know how it began. But my family has been Catholic for many, many centuries, and most of the women in my family have Maria somewhere in their name. It's in honor of the Blessed Virgin. It's considered an honor and a blessing to be named after the mother of Christ. I've been Catholic all my life and never heard about the "second coming" theory in regard to Mary, but only as it relates to Christ.

Because Catholics respect the Blessed Virgin Mary, Jesus's mother, and venerate her as a woman who did what we are all called to do: to bring Jesus into the world.

So this is the reason Catholics name their daughters Mary: that and because their sons would sound silly with a name like "Mary." :)

It is to honor the Blessed Mother.

She is the greatest created creature, and she said an amazing example for us with her "yes" to God.
