A hypocrite is someone, for instance, who professes to be a Christian, but does not possess the Christ he professes.

It seems everyone is a hypocrite, because those who say there is a God still commit sin once in a while, and those who say there is no God still perform acts of love once in a while. It would be great to love God and others all the time, and thus avoid hypocrisy, but that probably isn't possible this side of heaven.

Everyone is a hypocrite.
It is used when referring to a person who acts in contradiction of what they say or their beliefs. It is used a lot when referring to religious people who do not follow the beliefs of their religion.
That being said, I am a firm believer that we are all hypocrites in one way or another. I am full of contradictions and I don't let it bother me one bit. Even though it is never nice to be called a hypocrite, it can only be used in very specific situations to have any meaning.

Anybody who says God is love, but believes in the god of the Old Testament. This fact can not be reconciled and is clearly hypocritical.

It's when someone says they are opposed to something, but then do it themselves. Like Ted Haggard saying gay is bad... then going to a gay prostitute...

It is the origin of the saying "the pot calling the kettle black"

Someone who tells you how to do something, but they don't even do it themselves.

Example: Preist says, "You must not commit adultery, lie, steal, or cheat..." Then he goes out and sleeps with his girlfriend behind his wife's back, lies to her about having a wife, and steals 50 dollars from her wallet.

Think "Do as I say, not as I do."
