Please don't be discouraged! An initial weight gain is normal and then you should start to notice a shift in the way your body fat appears. Weight loss should follow. It is really important to remember that working out is not a free ticket to eat whatever you please. Weight loss only occurs when more calories are expended each day than consumed! Weight is not everything don't get hung up on losing until you are really into a varied workout schedule it will help keep the discouraging thoughts away!

People can gain weight from working out for two reasons: an increase in appetite sometimes occurs or muscle density is increasing. Thin people tend to notice weight gains the most. If you are gaining weight but not looking like you are plumping up, it probably means your exercise is doing exactly what it should. If you are getting plumper, then it might be helpful to change your eating habits slightly - maybe add a low-calorie/low sugar snack at the times of the day you feel hungry. Small snacks can actually help you eat fewer calories if they are timed right.

A lot of people have already made the basic point that muscle weighs more than fat, so that reducing fat when you start working out doesn't necessarily mean reducing pounds.

The good news is that muscle cells also burn more calories than fat cells do, so increasing your muscle mass will improve your metabolism. After exercising for a while, you'll be converting more of the food you eat to useful energy than into fat.

Finally, make sure that you're feeding your body the right fuel it needs for the exercise it's getting.

Refined sugars (sodas, cookies, white bread) and fats (fried foods, potato chips) don't help your body get stronger or build muscle. Make sure you're eating plenty of fruits and vegetables, lean proteins (chicken breasts, nuts, lean cuts of red meat) and whole grains, and stay well hydrated. This will give the body the fuel it needs to exercise and to build muscle, and the exercise you're getting will let you indulge in unhealthy food sometimes.

Not initially. Muscle weighs more than fat. If you are toning your muscles in the process you may actually see an increase in weight. Continue to exercise, fat will turn into muscle and disappear altogether.

Muscle weighs more than fat, if you are eating right and working out, you will first see the difference in loss of inches in the key areas of your body ( waist, hips etc)

Not necessarily. Muscle actually weighs more than fat so if you're getting in shape and building muscle your scale will actually read higher. You should be more concerned with how you look and feel than what the scale says.

You're either building muscle, or eating too much. Working out, but not eating right won't equal results. Work on your diet.

As many said above you are probably increasing your muscle mass, but don't despair, muscles BURN more calories so eventually you'll start losing assuming a proper diet.

It's probably muscle...use a tape measure and measure in inches instead of using the scale.
