It makes no sense to me either. The religion ties in science and religion into each other flawlessly.
Obviosuly people fear the truth.

i'm an atheist, and that i do no longer help the shutting down of Scientology on the grounds of its funds-making scams. i've got faith people have the wonderful to get rid of their funds for any reason they choose, no rely how abysmally stupid. I do help legal action against the Church of Scientology for its human rights abuses, consisting of using youngster hard paintings. i'm no longer cool with that. they'd desire to pay for what they have achieved (and are nevertheless doing), and those practices would desire to be abolished. After that, in the event that they choose to proceed amassing funds from credulous morons, they're loose to accomplish that, so a methods as i'm in touch.

People are down on it because it is a cult, not a religion. It suckers in people who are weak and confused (OK, that is like a religion), but then forces them to pay for whatever "services" are provided. Once in, they do everything they can to make sure their followers stay. They dictate their lives to them. They denigrate anyone who doesn't follow them, and attack those who speak out against them.
If Tom Cruise had an insane outburst based on the teachings of Methodism, and that showed people how strange Methodism is, then yes, the reaction would have been similar. Of course, for that to be true, Methodists would have to believe things as bizarre as Scientologists do.

Exactly! Anyone who doesn't believe we were kidnapped and massacred millions of years ago by the alien Xenu and had our souls put into a nuclear reactor are idiots! This is why we call them "body thetans" - they have no MIND. I myself have been on the cruise ship "Makewinds" and I have seen firsthand evidence of this occurrence. Until people choose to be audited by making enough money this earth will be forever run by nincompoops! All hail L. Ron Hubbard! Hallelughalah!

The one fact I know about Scientology is that it's founder,L.Ron Hubbard was born on March 13th. I know this because that is my birthday as well. There is something else I know and that is Hubbard was a lousey writer. I think I could do better than he did, much better. Anyway for a group that says it has solutions for a better world why do they have so many lawyers? If anyone criticizes them they become very litigious. At least Christians and Muslims don't send out batteries of lawyers to shut people up. They have other ways.

It's probably due to the more outlandish beliefs they have, and the rumour (I can't confirm it, honestly, so I'm skeptical) that they demand cash offerings from their members.
Just my thoughts, mate.
EDIT for the people making the "recognized cult" claims: there is no national or international guideline for defining a "cult." Scientology has tentatively received the same non-profit religion status in the US as any other church. Other countries have different views, obviously.

Nahhh he could have acted alot crazier and they would have said he had the joy of his religion, or was open about his pure joy, or something else complimentary.
Most people have no clue. I tried scientology and baptists both for a few years. As far as invasive, money grubbing, forcing wierd beliefs, and making it hard to quit... I had more trouble with the baptists.

Those that are "down" on Scientology have no first hand knowledge of it whatsoever. All their info is second hand via forums like this and collaborative internet sources, or media rubbish controlled by vested interest governments and cartels.
Unfortunately we live in a sheep society, that negates anything if told to do so, and rarely bothers to find out the facts for itself ,first hand, before having an "opinion".
Some of us would rather be told what to think than actually look and think for ourselves.

I find it funny that people see it as a cult and taboo, when if you study the history of the origins of Christianity and Islam, they are no more credible. I'm not saying that anyone in their right mind should follow the teachings of Ron Hubbard, but when those who follow organized religion mock these people it's quite comical.
cult:def
In religion and sociology, a cult is a group of people (often a new religious movement) devoted to beliefs and goals which may be contradictory to those held by the majority of society. Its marginal status may come about either due to its novel belief system or due to idiosyncratic practices that cause the surrounding culture to regard it as far outside the mainstream.
