I would suggest reading the book that explains ALL of Revelation in plainness. The book puts all other explanations of Revelation to open shame. Here is just a little of the commentary concerning your question:

The symbolism of the “woman” is used throughout Revelation to describe the ways of the world.

In Revelation 17:1, John is setting up the introduction of the actual proof of what is taking place in the latter days, and who “the woman” is, and what the “beast” is upon which she sits. Chapter 17, exclusively, describes “the woman” and “beast” with verifiable historical detail that cannot be denied. Then, Chapter 18 goes on to describe the “the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters,” or better, what is going to happen when Christ comes to the earth and reveals the truth.

17:2
...Again, a “king” receives power as we give it to him. He rules over us and tells us what to do because of this power. “The kings of the earth” are those who have allowed their fleshly lusts and desires to rule over them.
John uses the word “fornication,” because it alludes to our sexual desires which are the strongest lusts of human nature. People become “drunk with the wine of the cup of her fornication” when they pursue (“drink”) the lusts of the flesh: money, success, inequality, prestige, honor, glory, etc., and enjoy the effects of what they drink (“the wine of the cup”). In comparison, those who “drink of the wine of the wrath of God” as mentioned in Revelation 14:10, are feeling the effects of His non-intervention in their lives.

...17:3...“The woman sits upon the beast,” which carries her where it wants to go because it is not “bridled.” Its unique features will be explained in detail in the following verses. The “woman” (the children of God––see commentary on Revelation 12:1), who was once righteous, and was helped in the wilderness against “the dragon,” has now tamed and rides the “beast” in glory. “She” has become the whore of all the earth.

The gospel of Jesus Christ (“the man child delivered of the woman”) can help people against their fleshly lusts and desires (“the dragon”). But once the beast came along, “the woman” decided it was better to ride in glory rather than wander around in the “wilderness” alone. Humans have bent their hearts and souls to the gratification of their selfish desires, which perpetuate societies based on materialism, consumption, and selfishness. The people ride around on these desires without “bridle” or spur, which would direct the “beast” upon which they ride.

This is just a snippet. Reading the book from front to back is the best way to get a clear understanding. The best part about it is the book is free.

No body knows.

They don't even know what mystery Babylon actually refers to. There are about 20 Babylons formally in existance today including one on Long ISland New York.

I attended a three hour seminar on this by a Bible Scholar and one of the things he mentioned was the origianl Greek text did not emphesise, capitalize nor itaicise mystery

Most Bibles have as

Mystery Babylon

The original greek root Bible has it as

mystery Babylon

The emphysis on the Noun Babylon as a place

Not "mystery" as a modifier.

He documented all the known Babylons today as well as conjecutre on some theoretical ones, such as some future ocean ship named Babylon.

Conjecture of the Great Whore has been from anything from the US as a whole to Madonna or PAris Hilton or Britney Spears or the Pope (although he's usually reserved for the title Anti-Christ).

The apostle John probably had in mind the city of Rome itself [17:18] and especially its "upper class" citizens who lived in luxury. They had a desire for wealth, amusement, and pleasure [17:4, 18:3]. The beast is the Roman Empire that provides the opportunity for luxurious living. These forces work together at times and one of the outcomes is the killing of the "saints" or early believers. Some of these believers were slaughtered for amusement at the Coliseum before bloodthirsty crowds [17:6]. The emperors of Rome varied tremendously in their character. Some attempted to follow Roman virtues; others were corrupt, immoral, and even crazy. Still they were considered divine. In the latter half of the first century there were some brutal, corrupt dictators who ruled the empire. John saw Rome as the center of an immoral pagan culture, The Great Whore. By extension or application, the woman of Revelation 17 and 18 could represent any metropolis that is a center of economic and political power, greed, corruption, wealth gained by oppression, and is intolerant of Christian faith.

Me, in the past, the real typical whore of Babylone -- the whole good looking physical appearance, energy, mentality, and even earned money was completely dedicated to satisfying big shots in BBB (bosses, banks, and brewers) world.

I credibly, all the productivities made out of my life was shared for the most part by BBB, instead of me, my parents, my family, and the the Creator's universe womb.

Now I have got reborn outside BBB world and live sharing what I've in a peace, happiness, health, freedom, and wealth co-innovating and sharing community this family is a member; http://sonyahome.blogspot.com/

Since Babylon is what is now Iraq, and going by the history there, I would say it is the sin filled church. There is going to be, and already is a great apostasy in the church. When we see some of the things corrupting our church, and in the very presence of God, I believe we are seeing the whore of Babylon.

Revelations is calling to the seven churches, and how they need to be righteous.
