I have a "can" of Alstertor brand Herring Fillets in Dill-Herb Sauce, but I can't find an expiration date on it. Do foods of this kind (sardines, etc) expire? If so, how long are they normally good for?

Don't know why you put can in quotes. Is it a can or not? If it is a can then it has been through a commercial cooking process and is quite safe. It will be microbiologically safe virtually forever. Believe it or not there are still sealed cans from the early 1900's around. Depending on storage conditions and age the quality of the contents might not be great but It won't hurt you. Properly sealed and retorted canned goods have a shelf life of at least 2 years.

I wouldn't eat it. If you don't know how long you've had it... then it's been to long. I would just spend the $5 and get some more.
