format hard drive and install windows xp. You will lose all files though. If you have anything you want to keep, burn the files to a disk

Not only will you lose all of the files on your hard drive, you need to pay special care to ensuring you have the correct drivers for you computer.

First of all, you have to have a copy of Windows XP handy. You can't use the OEM disc from another computer to do this, either.

Second, open the Control Panel, open System, click on the Hardware tab, and open the Device Manager to get a list of all of your computer's hardware. Be sure to note what kind of video card, sound card, ethernet adapter, and wireless adapter you have.

After harvesting a list of your hardware, search Google or driversguide.com for your hardware and download Windows XP drivers.

This will be more trouble than it's worth. You'll also need to track down the drivers for all your hardware. That won't be fun.
