The best thing Americans can do to combat fundamentalist Islam is to combat Christian fundamentalism. Once we can ostracize our own Christian fundies (roughly 1/3 of the country), our complaints against radicals will mean more.
I mean, who has more faith than a suicide bomber?
Faith is worthless.

Islam as well as Judaism, Catholicism, and Christianity need no help from man or woman. What needs to be ask is, What can we do individually to fix ourselves and follow our practices to the best of our abilities?
When we do this, we fix ourselves to our way of life and not to the way things feel or the way we think they need to be. Start with self and then we as a whole can fix the world.
Whatever faith one professes is not the most important, but how we represent that faith is what matters.
Allah stated in the Qur'an "On this day, I have perfected your way of life." Nothing is wrong with Islam we have fanatics in all walks of life and we should not allow the few to misrepresent the many.

Fix Islam?
America needs to fix its screwed up foreign policy and its horrible image in all the foreign countries.
The average American has no understanding of Islam at all. That would be like asking plumbers to fix a computer.
If there is anything to "fix" in Islam, you would pretty much have to be a Muslim to do it.
Considering what Americans have done with Christianity, I don't think they are particularly qualified to fix any religions. In fact, they seem much more qualified to break them.

Americans should fix themselves first.
Islam was around before America. I agree that Islam has a lot of problems but only the Islamic community can fix them... the trouble is that Muslims blame everything on the western media and don't take any responsibility for themselves. They deny everything that goes on in Islam... there's always that culture vs. religion excuse, Jews and the western media to blame for. One or more of those 3.

Islam doesn't need fixing.
We should fix our country and let other countries fix themselves. There are far too many social problems in the US for us to be worrying about another countries problems. And we wonder why we're hated so much. If our help is needed, the country needing help can ask for it.

It can be fixed very easily... quickly... economically... once and for all.
My simple solution requires only that for one whole month, every newspaper in the free world devote its front page to offensive cartoons, ridiculing Allah (peace on him) and Mohammed (peace on him, too). By the end of that time, most of Islam will have self-destructed in a paroxysm of snits, hissy-fits and terminal apoplexy. WARNING: This will not be pretty... but the world will be a much better place for it.
My only regret in this is that I cannot think of a similarly uncomplicated, cost-effective and efficient stratagem for dismantling Christianity... but, oh well... one thing at a time. One only does what one can.

We cant fix it...
They have their own problems..and they need to fix it themselves. Shia, Sunni, interfaith wars exist in their own islamic faith. On top of that they feel we are trying to wipe out there faith...and i dont blame them for that. America has done a lot to loose their trust.
The best way to do it is to educate them to open up their mind. We are all humans. Ignorance is what creates war and false religious practices.
assist them in educating is my answer..thats the only thing we should do...and over time they will fix it on their own.

Americans have no business trying "fix" Islam. Are you perhaps trying to ask how America can help to "fix" the Middle East? I don't think we can solve other people's problems. We could offer assistance, but any real solution to such deep rooted problems will need to come from the people who have them. If you have a problem, you might ask for advice, but you are the only one who can truely solve it.

Why does Islam need to be 'fixed'?
I see it as no worse (or better) than Christianity.
Christianity went though various periods of bloody fundamentalism. How was that 'fixed'?
