It is possible they are doing a large training exercise. Some times they train off base for special ops. I did it when I was in. Sometimes we rattled the locals. I see it here where I live at least twice a year. Our nearest large base is about 120 miles away.

If you are in Hereford, TX, near Amarillo, TX and Clovis, NM it could be the new Air Force Special Forces guys coming in to Cannon AFB in Clovis. You will see more of those than the usual fighter jets that were there before. Cannon is not a Fighter wing anymore, so all the jets are gone. It is now a Special Forces unit and ther will be more helicopters than and maybe some other different aircraft we are not used to seeing in that area.

Well obvious answer is landing in Hereford for the SF boys. Also could be pilot familiarisation with different landing sites. Plus various other things could even be delivering stores. You'll never know unless you ask.
