The stupid icon things are such a waste of visual space. I know you used to be able to set the default so folders opened up showing files as a list or a details view but now it seems to always be in icon mode.

Is there a way to change this default view?

Of course there is, you must first go into Windows Explorer and select View as Detail. Then in the Menu bar, click Tools>Folder Options>View tab>click Apply to All Folders. Done!

Yes. I despise icons. I'd rather see the text, so I don't have to guess what the little pic means.

Go to Control Panel. On the very top menu, click "View" (usually the third command from the left). You will see a drop down list. Simply select "List" or "Details" and the icons will be gone.
