It would be great if prayer worked, when I was a kid I always prayed for bigger boobs so those would be nice to have.

Prayer works in the sense that if we all prayed for peace, then, shockingly, did the things that lead to it, it would work.
However, people think prayer is simply "I want a new truck, give it to me or I won't follow anymore" and that is absolutely wrong.
Prayer is like hope. Don't tell me, Atheist or not, that you have never "hoped" someone got better. What were you "hoping" on? Thats left for you to decide. God? Other? Nothing?

Prayer is NOT putting a coin in a vending machine and hoping something nice pops out.
Prayer is talking with my best Friend and listening to Him. After I have prayed my discouragement is gone, my fears are gone, my restlessness is gone and I enjoy incredible peace. I can leave my anxieties and worries about those I love with God, and enjoy life, knowing that He will take care of what I have entrusted to Him-- in His good time and according to His wisdom.

If prayer worked the same way as rubbing a lamp with a genie inside, I'd be afraid for the world. Very afraid.

Prayer does work. I have seen the hand of God move in my life, the life of my workplace, my family, my relationships, and my church. If prayer didn't work, then I would be in trouble right now. Prayer is my only way to communicate with the God that I worship. Indeed, it works. I'm sorry that you do not see that.

To me, prayer is effective even if it only helps me better identify my weaknesses and my goals.
I don't need miraculous interventions in order to find prayer beneficial. Nor do I need to prove any point.

I am delighted that it does, yes ( as evidenced by the presence of this august body gathered here today to ponder such things.)

My faith and my God have made a huge impact in my life. I have had prayers answered, as well as my friends and my family.
Prayer is more than a wishlist to santa clause...

I look at prayer as similar to meditation--it won't change anything but your own personal mindset. But sometimes that's a welcome change, so I guess it "works" in a way.

Yeah. If I thought it would work, I pray for some serious smiting.
