If you stand on regular ol' sand and shuffle your feet back and forth you will eventually, after about a week of doing this, be buried up to your neck.
In quicksand it takes about 3-4 minutes. Quicksand is really sand and water mixed; the sand is too hard to actually dissolve so you wind up with a slurry instead of mud. The more you struggle, the more you sink.

It is fast because it has a water content that is 20 times higher than ordinary sand.Usually this is caused by an underground spring. The result is that it is like a marsh bog, and it cannot support your weight, so you sink in it. The rate of your descent depends how much water content is in the sand.

The "quick" in quicksand does not refer to to speed, but rather to the archaic definition: "endowed with life." (as in "the quick and the dead").
It was so named because of the way it flows and acts to entrap you, as though it were alive.

If you step into quicksand, it won't suck you down. However, your movements will cause you to dig yourself deeper into it.
