When you are in commute, and there's traffic congestion on the way or something, and that's making you late.... Do you ALWAYS call your boss to inform him/her? Or can you kind of hope that the boss won't see you coming in late?

My boss would never know! She is always late and comes in after me.

Got a cell phone? Call. Always. The difference is this: Calling in means you've been unavoidably delayed and are a conscientious employee. Sliding in late means coming up with an excuse (and tell me you don't start to formulate that excuse on the way in, just in case you do get caught). Employers tend to look at excuses much like teachers look at "the dog ate my homework". Lame. Especially, as I said, since you likely have a cell phone ... and your boss likely knows you do.

We have a rule here, if you're going to be more than 15 minutes late you call if you can, other wise you call when you can. We're not on a time clock so we essentially just make it up. I'd rather have my boss know what I'm doing. I don't want her boss thinking she has no control of her staff, it won't fair well for any of us. We get a lot of leeway with her so I know I'm lucky.

If by boss you mean "supervisor" then you may want to call, otherwise you could just call the secretary and let her know. Most manager are either too busy or don't care if you are less than 1 hour late as long as you make it up.

You call if you want to be taken seriously and show that you are a responsible employee.
Dont call if you ont want.
But when you get caught sneaking in the back door, or you step on someones toes or they decide to clean up place your habits arent going to help people see you in a good light.

Cant go wrong with doing the right thing all the time.
Its actually called, having integrity!

Ask about the policy at your job. If I am going to be 5 or ten minutes late, I would probably not call, but any longer and yes. But it depends on your job.
