I dare any country in the world to attack us... we've got the most awe-inspiring, best-trained and bravest military in the history of mankind, spending more on defense every year than the rest of the world combined. We defeated the Nazis during WWII and stared down the USSR and their thousands of nukes during the Cold War with our own $5 trillion nuclear deterrant. What, did we spend that money needlessly or not?
Now a bunch of amateurs with boxcutters fly a couple of airplanes into buildings and we're ready to trade our freedoms for security, and lash out at any hapless, third-world country that looks cross-eyed at us. It's un-American if you ask me... pre-emptive war is cowardly and immoral, and the surrendering of our liberty through the Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act spits on the graves of all the brave soldiers who died fighting for our freedoms over the last 200 years... besides, its unbecoming of the supposed leader of the Free World.

I wish somwone with an opposing viewpoint would debate my arguement point by point.
And btw Brad, we are the only country threatening other countries with military attacks and nuclear war, by terrorizing the people of Iran with the implied nuclear threat that we will not 'take anything off the table'... and we even signed the treaty that allows them to develop nuclear power. It's not about their threat to us as they are not capable of being a threat to anyone except Israel... it's about the continuation of the dollar as oil-peg and reserve currency of the world and full-spectrum American hegemony in the oil-rich middle east. Armies massing on another countries borders should not even be enough to warrant a pre-emptive attack, let alone rumors about and misinterpretations of the leader of another country.

I wish someone would try to disprove my theory. no one has even come close to addressing the fact that it is our fear that is driving us to unwisely attack other countries pre-emptively.

I guess you weren't around during the last administration when we carried out a pre-emptive war against Yugoslavia in Kosovo Province, even involving other NATO troops in the conflict. We also caused the downfall of the regime in Belgrade by doing so.
The Military Commissions Act hasn't take away any freedoms of plain, ordinary Americans. It has been, in fact, quite a benevolent piece of legislation. Those who face these commissions are, in fact, illegal combatants under the Law of Land Warfare (Geneva Conventions). In a previous conflict they would have been summarily executed and nothing more would have been heard of them.
You speak of amateurs with box cutters causing us to suddenly be aware of the threat of terrorism. On that point I agree with you. We didn't do squat about that threat during the decade which preceded the attack on America. But, I do take umbrage at your trying to use me, a 25-year veteran of the Cold War, the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis as someone who might view our current operations against these terrorists with disdain. Quite the contrary. I am proud of everything our military has done to date. I wish them continued success in the future. They stand tall while civilians go to the mall.

It depends on which Americans you are talking about.
Some of them looked out and said "Enough is enough" and this stops - Now. And we are willing to do whatever it takes to keep you from doing this again.
The rest went and decided that pretending the problem does not exist will do something to solve the problem.
BTW - what specific actions do you not have the freedom to do today that you did have before the Patriot act?

When a country's leader is foolish enough to threaten another country with military and nuclear attacks, the preemptive issue is put back on the table, as it should be.
For people to criticize this option is foolish and un-productive. There needs to be options for retaliation when threats are made, just chalk it up to diplomacy with attitude !
