What's the best all purpose Whiskey to keep on hand? I'm not a Whiskey drinker but at parties I've hosted I've had requests for Whiskey. So it's time to stock a bottle for such requests, but what type? There is Irish, Canadian, Bourbon, and Scotch both single and blended malts. If I'm going to stock one bottle what should it be, and what brand? Mind you I don't want to serve my guests rot gut, but I am on a budget so there not getting Jonnie Walker Blue Label any time soon at my place.
The second part of my question would be, if I were to stock two different types, what would the best choices be?

The one whisky I keep on hand is Bushmill's.
It's a blend from Country Antrim, made in the oldest whiskey distillery in the world. Runs $23.99. Irish whiskey is a little more expensive, and Bushmill's is actually a relatively inexpensive brand.
If I was to keep a second type on hand, it would probably be Southern Comfort. It's really liquid candy instead of whiskey. It's $18.99 in 100-proof.
If you don't let me go with Comfort, I'd get Old Overholt Rye ($13.99) or Seagrams VO Canadian ($13.99).
All prices are for 750-ml bottles at Pennsylvania state stores.

Most people, when asking for whiskey, do not mean scotch. Still, it's probably good to have a bottle of scotch around for those that want it.
I agree with Carlotta - Makers and Crown should satisfy most drinkers. Jack Daniels, while good, is not what I want when I say "whiskey". Jack is bourbon. Southern Comfort is a cordial and is way too sweet for someone expecting whiskey.

Jack Daniels is a good all around whiskey for straight or mixed drinks. For a second choice, go with bourbon or scotch.

Usually when somebody requests "whiskey" they are asking for a blended Canadian whiskey..Good choices are Crown Royal, Wisers or Canadian Club. These are all smooth.

Jack Daniel's & Jim Beam are great all purpose whiskies, and are not very expensive. I'd go for a blend for the 2nd choice -like VO or Seagrams 7.

I personally like Scotch. Make sure you have plenty of ice or that the scotch came from the freezer or fridge because it would suck to drink it warm. I did one time and trust me it sucks so bad. It makes you hate whiskey especially scotch.
