My husband was just diagnosed with Optic Neuritis and has lost about 60% of his vision in his left eye. He has an appointment an MRI do further testing, to determine what might be causing it.

Has anyone ever had or know of someone who has had this?

We have looked online but as you all know sometimes there is way to much info and always the worst case scenarios.

I've dealt with many cases of it.
The key issue is, indeed, "to determine what might be causing it."
About 40% of cases are a single episode, with no proven underlying cause, and no recurrance, leading to varying degrees of recovery from little improvement through to so complete that only careful tests will show the eye once had a problem.
Few doctors will, most wisely, predict what the final outcome is likely to be.

If an underlying cause is traced the likelihood of recurrance and the degree of recovery will very much depend on this diagnosis.
The "elephant in the room" is the question of multiple sclerosis which does have long term health implications.
MS is not infrequently detected though presenting with a case of optic neuritis. But there are a range of other possibilities apart from the 40% mentioned above. For examples Lupus, or reaction to Chloramphenicol, (an antibiotic).
Once the treatment of the eye with steroids is underway, everything else waits on diagnostic tests.

Best wishes for your husband.
