The ability to sleep deeply for long periods of time is the hallmark of predatory carnivores. In a safe environment, cats sleep 10-14 hours a day to conserve energy and digest large meals, an evolutionary holdover from their feral past. Wolves, foxes and bears also do this, though bears are obviously able to shut down almost completely to hibernate when food is scarce during the winter.

Cats are SO good at sleeping that they've been used by the army for sleep studies.

They doze quite a bit, so are good candidates for light and deep sleep research. I've never heard of any cat being an insomniac.

never heard of a case where one couldn't which is why, as a narcoleptic, cats are my animal of choice.
