My boyfriend gets really sick with allergies every year at this time. He takes Claritin and it seems to not be giving him any relief lately. He doesn't have insurance to go see a doctor. Every night he seems to get worse . His nose stops up so bad that he can't breathe. He's tried Vick's to open up his nasal passages and that doesn't work. Can someone recommend something over the counter that will give him relief.

Have him start taking a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day to help his body develop immunities to all the air born irritants around him like pollen, smog, dust, and pet dander. Local honey will also keep him from catching every little germ that floats by in the winter. Make sure he stays away from nose sprays and antihistamines-they dry out the sinus cavities. Cracks can form up there by blowing your nose too hard and then-infection. Dehydration is also bad for your kidneys and other organs as well as your skin. Please try taking local honey-like all herbal remedies, it takes a while to work but all his allergies will be gone.

Brandi: It must be very hard to see your boyfriend suffer like this. He can try a decongestant with pseudoepinephrine as the active ingredient to clear the stuffiness (antihistimines don't work on that). If you are in the U.S., you will probably have to ask for it at the pharmacy and sign a piece of paper saying you are over 18 and only buying one box. It's crazy, but the druggies use it to make crytal meth, so now the quantity is controlled. The Aleve cold & sinus is a good formula. Since he is much worse at night, you should tell him to get one of those allergy covers for his mattress. I know you are on a budget, but you can get them from this on-line place for anywhere from $30 to $60. They would really help his allergies. I also wash my sheets in this de-mite laundry stuff so I don't get a stuffy nose at night. I will send you a link to that. A bottle of it is about the same price as going to a movie. It is tough when you don't have insurance, but usually the local government has some kind of program. If your boyfriend is living on his own with a limited income in the U.S., he may qualify for Medicaid. That program varies from state to state. Try the decongestant and encourage him to take some of the preventative measures.

There are nose drops out there like nasal crom or flonase. They are expensive. Tell him to try different antihistamines. Tri aminic for adults. But be careful because some antihistamines can cause an increase in blood pressure. How about benedryl. Or contact. or mucinex. Is there a free clinic nearby.

Get a good air purifier. Place it in the bedroom to clean out the pollen. That will help him get a good night's sleep.

Benedryl always works like a charm but it makes you super sleepy. Give that a shot.
