I think that statement was complete BS. Are they including pre-schoolers or something?

Most Americans can't do that because they don't own maps.

I believe it.

When I moved to Virginia from Washington state, I met dozens (I'm serious) of people who didn't know there was a state called Washington. Or where it was.

Some of them had heard of Seattle, but didn't know what state it was in. Or where it was on a map of the US.

Now I'm married to a man from Ghana, and find that there are an annoying number of people who think (a) African is a country (it's a continent with about 56 countries), and (b) there's one major "African Language" (There are 45 recognized languages in Ghana, alone). My kids have had other students "clicking" at them, assuming that they're Bushmen from the Congo or something.

I'm trying to make sure MY kids grow up knowing how to read a map, and how to point out the different places they've lived and travelled.

I've heard that before (although with varying numbers that are usually lower than 50%), and I've got to agree with you that it's total BS. I'm an American, and don't know a single person who couldn't locate the United States on a map.

If they can't find America on the map, something is wrong!
That is something you learn in grade school.
The question was 50% of AMERICANS can't find America on the map,not 50%people from other countrys.

It was a FIFTH. A Fifth.

My statistic is that 50% of Americans can't handle statistics.

A fifth is 20%. That 20% includes children, senile old people and people who live in red states.

although it was 1/5 I still don't believe it, they probably went to a special school and asked them

Edit: i found what they were basing the WHOLE of America on... 510 people that's not that much to be saying that 300 MILLION people are exactly like those 510 people that's .00017% of the population. And as IF there wouldn't be a bias on them. Omg I cannot believe they put out that information when it is very inaccurate.. well in MY opinion it's inaccurate

Yeah, that's a bunch of hogwash. Even our illegal immigrants can find America without a map. This statistic is highly controled and very inaccurate.
