Yesterday at a $25000 per person meet and great, Al Gore stated that "the entire polar ice cap will be gone in 23 years if we do not stop global warming". Does anyone out their think that Al really believes this nonsense or is he just doing it so he can be in the spotlight?

Who would pay him if he said "We have nothing to concern ourselves with during our lifetime"?

Remember, "global warming" is about the money.

Maybe he's right, maybe he's wrong. It's hard to say and it would also depend on the context in which he made the statement.

Until recently it was thought that the Arctic ice would be a permenant feature of the planet for the next 100 years. The world is now warming faster than ever and the temps in the Arctic are increasing faster than originally believed. So much so that the latest estimates are that the Arctic ice will be gone completely each summer in just 40 years time.

The Arctic ice covers 4 million square kilometres, each year the periphery melts in summer and refreezes in winter. The average over the last few years has been a net loss of 100,000 sq km each year - hence the 40 year projection.

The 'ice season' runs from October when it's at it's minumum through to April when it peaks and then back to October again. Although this season isn't yet complete there has already been record melting with over 1 million sq km of ice having melted. When the ice reforms it's likely that this year there will have been a net loss of 200,000 sq km of ice (twice the recent mean). If this were to be repeated each year then Gore would be correct.

first of all, al gore is the Michael Moore of environmentalists. No one should believe his overdramatized, out of context, ludacris premonitions about what will happen to the earth. Think about it. The earth has been fluctuating temperatures for its whole existence, almost 4 billion years. We have just been fortunate enough to live in a very habitable climate for the past twenty thousand years or so. Granted, human impact on the environment has been a factor in the past century, but it will never reach the point of a total polar meltdown caused by man. We think to highly of ourselves, it would take an enormous effort, much more polluting than we do nowadays, to completely melt the caps. Now the caps are melting because of increased temperatures, but the planet goes through warm and cold periods, what will happen is once enough cold water comes down from the artic, enters into the gulf stream and other major ocean currents(which have way more effect on the climate than pollution ever will) the temperature will start to gradually cool down because of increased circulation of cool water around the world. sorry to be so long winded but I am tired of people complaining about the environment, just becuase some guy on tv said so, remember Al Gore is just a politician he lies for a living. Thanks for reading, would love any feedback

In 1980 the north polar ice cap was 7.8 million sq km. In 2005, it was down to 4.6 million sq km. I believe his predictions. And it melts into the ocean so its not giving us fresh water!
I think Al, like many other people is scared sh*tless about the rate of ice melts an dother factors. If he has a motive its to go down in history as the guy who kick started turning this around.

Seriously guys, I have a friend who works for the Coast Guard and is in the arctic a lot. He tells me the change is huge and obvius to anyone who's been there. Cruise ships are altering tehir roots, nations are planning to use the NorthWest Passage on a regular basis- saving millions in shipping costs, galciers are in retreat all over the world, Greenland's permafrost is melting changing traffic routes, etc. Its all very measurable and anyone who lives in the north knows it is 100% real as do the vast, vast majority of climatologists.

The website below shows the shrinking ice mass of the north pole.

Hi my friends! It took me some time to prepear a new video for you. But today I uploaded it to youtube. Here is the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aZpSRZjnpA Sorry, the sound is not the best, but I hope you understand the message. In fact, if you understand Spanish, there are a much more videos about "Global Warming" which I recorded from the tv here in Mexico. I am German, but I live now in Mexico City and after investigating about Global Warming I started my proyect: "Lights Out 9999" because I think it is important that we all get more information about it and start to take care about our unique place, called Earth. Even if there are still people thinking that Global Warming is not true we all should be more concerned about our future and take care about our environment. I invite you all to join "Lights Out 9999" and if you also have some information, videos, photos, ideas etc., please feel free to contact me, send me what you got and I will publish it on my new website: http://www.otumba.com/lightsout9999 Sorry if my English is not that good, but I try my best. I also ask you to help me to translate everything to more languages, because it is very important that everybody in every country can understand what I put on this website. By now I only have one good friend who is helping me a lot (Will Wyckoff), but I need more people, more information, languages. I hope I can count on you. Also if there is another organisation, lets work together! Our planet is very sick and we are all doing our part of destroying it. So, I think it is our obligation to cure it, change many things. We have to learn that money and power is not everything. And there is not to much time left, very soon we are reaching the "point of no return". Cientists are telling us that if we don´t act in the next 10 years, it is to late - and between 50 and 100 years it could be that life will be impossible on Earth. Think about your families, kids, grandsons, friends. Thank you very much for your time and I hope, I can count on you.
Here are all my links about my movement:

I think he meant in summer (which has never happened in the time Man has been here). It's at the high end of scientist's predictions, but it's not nonsense. Read about it here:

http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2003873003_arcticice07m.html

"the ecosystem around the North Pole is rapidly transforming", says Mark Serreze, of the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado. He goes even further than Overland, predicting the Arctic Ocean will be completely ice-free in summer by 2030.

"If you had asked me a few years ago, I would have said it wouldn't happen until 2070 or 2100,"

i believe it and if you live on the coast then it would hurt to try to clean the environment and make the atmosphere cleaner because you will be moving inland in 23 if you (and everyone) don't step up and do something. correlation doesn't equal causation. but in this case the correlation is quite high and even if it's wrong, cleaning the atmosphere is still a good thing.

Here's a fabulous concept: when you click on this site, Care2 makes a donation that will remove one pound of carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. It doesn't cost you a thing and every click really counts. Check it out:

ONCE AGAIN....

Global Warming MEANS "World Wide Warming!" It is ONLY A Political Term = NOT based in Real Science!

The EARTH is covered by "Three Quarters WATER!" Basic Science, it takes ONE-Btu to raise One Cubic Centimeter ONE Degree Centigrade!

HOW many "Gazillion Cubic Centimeters are there ONLY on the Surface of Planet Earth COVERED by 3/4 Water?"

HOW many Btu's would it take TO RAISE THE SURFACE TEMPERATURE ONE DEGREE?

DO THE MATH!

And, were are the Million TEMPERATURE MEASURING SITES on the Many Oceans THAT TELL US THAT THE OCEAN TEMPERATURES ARE RISING? Not!

Oh yes, POLAR temperatures have varied LESS Than one degree in the past 100-Years. Noticed I said VARIED, = NOT RISEN!

Thanks, RR

The theory of man-made global warming is false. Anyone who believes otherwise has not investigated the evidence or is purposely remaining ignorant to the legitimate opposition to global warming. I have given up an one and a half hours to watch “An Inconvenient Truth” so I ask you to do the same and watch the movie detailing the opposition.
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...
Another general resource: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/global_warm...

CO2 is not causing the globe to warm the opposite is true, the warming is increasing the atmospheric CO2. When the world heats it gradually increases the temperature of the oceans which serve as the largest CO2 sink. As the oceans heat up they release CO2 which is stored in them. The information comes from the same data Al Gore uses, the temperature always goes up before the concentration of CO2 goes up.
http://www.lavoisier.com.au/papers/artic...

CO2 makes up only .03% of our atmosphere. Water vapor, another greenhouse gas, makes up 1-4% of our atmosphere, this gas is acknowledged to be the main greenhouse gas. All human activities combined contribute only 6 Gigatons of CO2 to the atmosphere each year. Animals, through respiration, decomposition, etc contribute 150 Gigatons of CO2 to the atmosphere. So humans contribute only a small amount of CO2 to the atmosphere which is already in very small concentrations in the atmosphere.
http://oco.jpl.nasa.gov/science.html... This is where my data came from, it is an interesting site, it displays the same graphics as Al Gore in his movie but it tells how low the human contribution is. So Al Gore is using the same data but coming to a different conclusion, who do you want to believe a politician with no scientific training or the NASA CO2 laboratory, a group of scientists who spend their entire careers studying CO2.

We know the greenhouse effect is real it is a necessary effect to keep our planet at a habitable temperature. However if our current warming is due to greenhouse gasses it would cause warming in the troposphere , but the troposphere is actually getting cooler.
http://wwwghcc.msfc.nasa.gov/temperature... That points to other explanations to our current warming.

So what is causing our current warming, it is the sun.
http://web.dmi.dk/solar-terrestrial/spac...
http://www.aip.org/enews/physnews/2003/s...
http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/06...
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/200...
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2003/...
The fact that only the earth’s surface is warming points to direct heating from the sun rather than heating due to greenhouse gasses. Also other planets in our solar system are warming pointing to a common cause of warming, that common cause being the sun.

The global warming crowd says our glaciers are melting and animals will suffer this is another false claim.
http://www.co2science.org/scripts/co2sci...
http://www.nationalcenter.org/npa235.htm...
http://www.worldclimatereport.com/...

The global warming crowd also claims a scientific consensus on the issue, this is wrong in two ways. One, there is no consensus, this is a false claim to make you believe in global warming by suppressing the opposition. http://www.oism.org/pproject/s33p36.htm...
Second, even if there was a consensus it would mean nothing, science is not politics, you don’t vote on theories to determine their legitimacy.
Here’s 21 pages of websites that disagree with global warming.
http://www.climatechangedebate.org/docum...
The thought that the only scientists who disagree with global warming are paid by oil companies is simply a stupid statement with no reality. This is the most illogical argument by people in support of global warming. Aside from being completely false it begs another question: Who pays global warming supporters? The answer is big environmental agencies that make millions off of global warming each year by teaching, publishing books, and selling environmentally clean products.

The IPCC is the main supporter of global warming, their statements are defended blindly by people who don’t want to admit that global warming is not real. People will claim that they took into account natural sources of CO2, they didn’t. Take a look for yourself:
http://www.ipcc.ch/activity/srccs/index.... That is the latest IPCC report, read the entire report, do a search of the documents, there is absolutely no mention of natural sources of CO2.

The globe was warming long before cars and factories were built.

Besides, we get more fresh water this way.
