There has to be a little more to your question than you are saying.
Most 16 year olds are either involved in sports and/or working.
Do you have a car to get to a job and back home? I say go get a job, I'm not sure why she wants you to pay rent unless you are a complete slob whose lays around all day and doesn't contribute to the household chores.
Are your parents together or divorced?
Divorced? Your dad may be paying child support which is to go toward your costs of living. A roof over your head, food, clothing, school costs, etc..
So feel free to add more for better advise if I didn't help you.

No, this is not against the law. I payed what my parents called "room and board" the moment I got a job. It's called "Training for the Real World".
You are not entitled to anything. In this "Real World", you only eat, live under a roof, buy clothes and drive a car if you "EARN IT". There is no magical parent living down the street shelling out sheckles for your rent. You do it like everyone else... by working. This is not abuse, and this is not mean. This is a training session for what you will, in just a couple short years be doing for yourself... working a job and paying bills.
Thank God your Mom realizes the value of this and is enforcing it. It will teach you how to budget, bargain, spend wisely and save for a rainy day. Three cheers to this Mom!

I wished I could move back home with my parents and just pay rent again! Jeez! You are lucky! As for your brother, shame on him for not offering to pay your parents rent. It's the least he could do! You just show him up when you start work again and actually pay your way and sleep with a clear conscience at night. If the rent is too steep for your salary, just negotiate. Good luck!

It sounds like you two need some mediation help. Do you have a department of social services in your county? Call them. Tell them what's up, and ask if they have any services for teens who are having trouble at home. Maybe you can get free or low-cost counseling.
I don't think she legally can make you get a job and charge you rent, but she probably can make life so miserable you'd want to leave, and that's not good for anyone? Are you still enrolled in school, just on a home school program? If you are, start with the guidance counselor at the last school you attended (which is where you'd still be registered). Tell them what's happening, and ask for some help.

16 is a legal age to start working. Maybe the reason she is putting so much pressure on you could be that you don't help out at home. You either do chores or get a job and start paying rent. My daughter can't wait until she starts working. Legal age in New York is 14 but she can only do a part-time job.

Why does she think you need to pay rent just because you are homeschooled? Homeschooled doesn't mean you just sit around...the rules of the house should be no different now.
The legal age is 18 and she cannot force you to pay rent. She is the parent and it is her responsibility to care for you and provide your basic needs.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't help out with chores or get a job to buy yourself clothes or to help pay for your entertainment and for extra cash you may need for your non essential expenses.
Be respectful and talk to your mother...

Wake up buddy if you are having issues at public school, who is your principal now.... yes it your mom.
who is your teacher now... yes its your mom.
Step up to the plate - get a job or get a education or become a bum.
