affirmative action to blame? Jesus the knuckledraggers are out in force.
You can blame the Me generation created by your lovely Ronald Reagan. The idea is: the only thing that matters is my money, my world, my people... and you don't count. And anyway, you are the stupid consumer, but I am the god in control of selling you my precious product or service! I'll screw you, you'll pay, and afterward our staff will stand around and laugh at the losers who shop in our store.
I worked in such a place. Glad I don't any more.
I wanted to burn it to the ground with all the 20 something bastards in it.

It has gone the way of other customer service perks such as getting an actual "live" person when calling a customer service line, someone else pumping your gas for you and cleaning your windshields, and finding a short line in a grocery or department store. The trend is more to self-service, and self check outs.
I actually found a locally owned bank that has coffee and cookies always available at their branches, and when the tellers are not busy, they come to the door and open them for customers. I wonder how long till they are bought out/merged and look like every other bank?

Well, customers used to be a lot more polite than they are now, too. Now, they are yapping on cell phones while you are checking them out, they are yelling at the clerks for prices that the clerk has no control over, and they are generally too much in a hurry to be polite to clerks, even to say "Hello," or "Thank you." They lie to the store and claim that something was bought there if it wasn't, or they are careless with an item, don't read the directions, and want a refund when they break it. After a while, it gets hard to tell the difference between the clients who TRULY have a problem, or ones that are just trying to wiggle their way out of a problem that they, themselves have caused.
On the other hand, clerks seem to have lost the knack for customer service, too. So many stores have shifted to self-service that it's hard to tell if a customer even WANTS help. ("No, just looking.") When customers treat a clerk like a cash register, that's pretty much what they get in return.
I'm not sure the right word is "rude". I think it's more that people don't take the time to actually be considerate of those that they interact with.

I take it you are not in a customer service position?
The customer is NEVER always right.
Only an arrogant holier than thou inconsiderate rude customer thinks that.
You should hear the horror stories about rude customers. I can't believe people act like that nowadays. GIMMEGIMME... rude!
Yes, there ARE rude employees. THOSE need to be reported to management.
But no, the customer is not and never has been always right.

even though they seam to be "inconsiderate", "greedy" and "bargaining" for everything, u have to be as nice as can to them. try and tell them what u can and can't do for them and they should understand or get more upset, send them to the manager.
