I have been drinking Lavazza Qualita Rosa for years now. Just the right balance of smoothness and bitterness. You can buy Lavazza ready ground or in bean form. The beans are nicer if you have more time because it releases more of the natural oils which create the crema (the natural froth) in an espresso machine.
Also nice is Illy Espresso Caffe Macinato. It's as smooth as velvet, but I actually prefer the slightly harsher, more bitter taste of Lavazza. Again, it comes in ground or bean form and the beans are nicer than the ground if you have the time to grind them yourself.
If you're in the US, both brands should be available. If not, try an Italian deli.

It is really up to you how you personally define "good coffee".
The stock at the grocery stores, although "vacuum packed for guaranteed freshness" may be 6 months to 28 months old.
The coffee shops are of course fresher by a few months to a few weeks.
Consumers come in all shapes and sizes and with different preferences so I will say to you, try a few. Taste and rate them as good , bad and I will never buy this again.

The best coffee available at grocery stores are made by Gavina Coffee Company. It is your pick of roast that you like, I prefer french roast. The best coffee at some special food stores is from Illy.

An extensive national survey ranked the Sam's Club brand (the name escapes me right now) that is sold only at Sam's Club in second place, just behind Starbucks. I drink it all the time and it is EXCELLENT.
If you live in the South, you might want to look out for Community Coffee, which is as good as coffee gets.
