For casual snapshots, you really can't go wrong with a canon or sony or one of the other top brands. There really isn't much difference in quality, and if there is, you can always edit it with the free editing software the camera comes with when you buy it.
I won't give you any model numbers or anything, choose one that suits your presonal preference. They all come with some sort of gimmicky selling point, for instance a camera may have some sort of image stabilizer, or it could have a really big lcd screen. Whatever features a camera has, the image quality will not be that different from the next model in the same price range. Just make sure that it is a new, and current model.
Also, keep in mind that the megapixel size has nothing to do with the image quality, it only relates to the magnification of the picture. Usually 6megapixels is enough for casual shooting. Anything more would just take up storage capacity in your memory card.

All of the major brands are good. Choose a brand that appeals to you. Then you have to think about getting a spare battery, what size memory card, if you want an extended warranty, how much you can afford, what size zoom, if you want manual controls, the size of the camera, finding a reliable place to purchase it, and the list goes on and on and on.......
The first thing to realize is that almost any digital camera will take good pictures. If more people would read the manual more than once, they would be able to take better pictures. Usually, the person assumes it is the camera when it could be them not knowing exactly what to do. Just give yourself more photographic knowledge by doing more reading on the internet.
I really believe buying a camera is an individual choice.
The person needs to read alot of reviews on cameras so they can decide on the features that they really want and need.
Go to the store and hold them so you can see if they feel comfortable in your hands. If possible, take some pictures in the store to check the quality of the pictures.
I can only give a suggestion of what to look for in a new digital camera.
Good Luck

Pretty much any digital camera made today will fit your requirements. Just set everything to automatic.
The question is how much do you want to pay? Unless you want to pay for features you probably won't use, you probably want an entry level point and shoot camera. There are a lot of good ones out there. Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Sony, Fuji, Kodak, and a whole bunch I'm forgetting.

I've been happy with the Fujfilm Finepix F10. If your price range is about $150 get one. If you'd rather spend $400, get the F50.

Maybe you don't want to spend more than $150 for your camera, then Canon Powershot A560 is good for you.
