Before you take the medication road right away, there are some great talking and behavioral therapies that can really help you get to the core of what's causing your illness and a trained accredited practitioner can be of enormous help to you.

On the complementary medicine side fish oil and omega 3 (ie flaxseed) has been clinically proven to help depression as well as St Johns Wort cam help. Melatonin can also help you sleep (its used for people suffering jet lag). Good health and sleep hygiene plus the dreaded exercise all do help.

But if you need medication, don't be scared of taking it because the right regime can change your whole life. Its a great crutch while counseling helps you deal with the issues arising from and around, in, the depression.

Cliche or not, exercise has still been found as effective against depression as pills. Get out and walk. Find activities outside. Volunteer for as many charities as you can. When you are depressed you want to stay home and roll up in a ball. I know! You have to force yourself to get out and partake in life. Look in your local paper or on-line for clubs or groups that might interest you. (like gardening, cards, hobbies etc). Make yourself open to new people and ideas. Try something you never thought of..like dance lessons, or learning to play a musical instrument. Make yourself get out of the house! If you work. Get outside at lunch. (no matter what the weather) I live in Canada it gets -40 so don't say the weather is bad. ;) . What ever you do DON'T stay cooped up in your house having a pity party for yourself...I know been there, done that..how's that for cliche.

Well, cliché or not, exercise is a natural anti-depressant. Even taking short 10 or 15 min brisk walks helps the system and brain chemistry. Getting enough sleep is also important. Actually moving and doing something, whether inside or outside alleviates the depressive mood. Think about doing some occasional volunteer work or taking up a healthy hobby in the home where you are actually doing something and not dwelling on your depression. Other than that there are medications and therapy. A combination of some or all of these should help in ending depression, or at least controlling it so it doesn't take over you life.

Exercise might be cliche, but it is actually quite effective. The body releases endorphins, or "feel good" chemicals, during exercise. It is a natural mood booster.

Many people find help for their depression by seeking out religion, prayer, and relying on a strong support system of friends.

However, if you are too deep into your depression, I highly recommend you see someone and discuss your treatment options. There are many medications that need only be taken for 6 months to a year to help ease your depression and get you back to normal. That, in conjunction with therapy, is the most successful.

You may not be able to end it, but you can reach a point where you are managing it and having a good life.

I know a woman who has gone the exercise route and now she exercises 10 hours a day. So obviously, she has made it part of her disease.

I would say if you do a brisk walk for an hour a day and it doesn't completely help, then also do some combination of medications and talk therapy.

Everyone's journey is different. Good luck on yours.

There are many options for you to make yourself lively and happy. But you must have the courage and strength to wake up from bed each morning and doing them in order to see miraculous changes in your life. Here are some options for you:

3. Read novels that interests you: mystery, suspicion, adventure, etc.

4. Go to the gym and work out.

5. Go for long lazy walks in the evenings under cool crisp air and sip a cup of coffee.

You have options I hope. You can
A) Consider therapy
B) Family and friends you can rely on and talk to them
C) Go to some "hospitals" or "charity organizations" and help out.
Sometimes, being around other people who are more "vulnerable" or "fragile" than you, can open up your mind and take you away from your own pain.
I wish you good luck!!

Not Cliche, proven. Exercise produces endorphins, endorphins improve mood. If that doesn't work, I suppose it depends on what types of things you like to do. and if those things don't work. See a doctor. it may be clinical. You may need medicine to feel better.
