I have a terrior mix dog and my girlfriend has 2 cats, tabby I believe. I have once seen my dog at a groomer's roaming the room freely with a loose cat and they both seemed okay, but I just have that concern. My dog can be loud and aggressive, especially when he sees another animal outside. He also is a "chaser". I would like to know the easiest way to introduce or try to see if my dog would get along with her 2 cats as we do plan on moving in together and we don't want to have to make a sacrifice. I also don't want to rely on the one time I saw him and a cat roaming around a room. Any ideas or suggestions?

Oh, and one of her cats is an older female who kind of just lays around and is pretty calm. The other is still quite young, a male, and is always the "center of attention", so to speak.

sure they can. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs that get along fine. but my cats are always hissers when i bring a we cat/dog home. just let the dog roam the house with the cats (with the lesh still attached, for easy restraint) and let the cats be. downt worrie if the cats hiss or paw, they'll do that. but dont let the dog attck them. the cats might be a little moody for a while but they should calm down and be fine.
hope this helps.

YES they can get along, as long as you properly introduce them to each other. Have the cats crated when you first bring them into the home with the dog. Allow your dog to sniff, smell, even bark (although he probably won't) to his hearts content so he can get the scents of these cats. The older, lazy one is probably safe. Since terriers love to chase things (cats, in particular), you may have a little "speed-way" going on there with your dog chasing the younger cat. But, as long as he knows that they belong there (and this is going to take some time), there's a good chance that they are just playing, and the cat may be the instigator of the chases by aggravating the dog. You are going to have to watch them carefully for a week or so, but they should be alright together. My son has 2 dogs and 1 cat and they all get along just fine.

Really not a big deal.

I've always had both, multi cats and up to 1/2 dog dogs.
Have a lspoiled ittle old terrier now and still introduce new pets to household.

The main trick? DON'T make a big "issue" over it.
Animals sense anxiousness and over concern and will react to it.

There will be apprehension and maybe an attempt to chase, a scruff hackle up on dog and a hiss and arched back (s) on cats after an initial "sniff",... if there's no major fighting, they'll soon walk away and ignore after the introduction/greeting is done. Soon all will be fine when the curiousity is over with it.
Promise!

In this situation, it will depend on the temperment of the cats. A terrier has the natural tendency to pursue animals that scurry and make rapid movements. ( ie. if it runs, chase it). If her cats carry on as if they don't care, I don't predict any problems as long as they are never left alone unsupervised together for at least the first week or so. As the cats are more comfortable in their own home, I would suggest taking your dog to them on a leash and see the reactions.
I have done rescues in the past and have never encountered any problems between dogs and cats. My cats are used to dogs and seem to make a point of sauntering around the house to prove that they own it.

The cats will hide until they are comfortable. My cats and dogs get along just fine. Some cats ignore, some hide, some play with the dogs. Introduce them gently, maybe across a doorway that has a child fence on it, so they can sniff and get used to each other's scent.

Yes they can! Since they didn't grow up together it will just take a little longer for them to get used to each other. Most terriers are very active so he will probably get along great with young cat, but I would defiantly watch him around the older female cat. Good luck!

Sure. We have two dogs and have had up to six cats at once with them. Keep in mind that terriers were meant to chase after and catch small animals, but one of my dog's is a terrier mix and she has never hurt another animal.

The Marin Humane Society (www.marinhumanesociety.org) and The Anti-Cruelty Society (www.anticruelty.org) both have info on their web sites about introducing animals to each other.

My house pets? I have three dogs (all relatively large) two cats and a lame goose (she can't walk and so, sits on a towelwith food and water in front of her). Everyone gets along just fine. But the dogs DO love both the cat and goose food. The oldest cat and the goose are in charge and the dogs know it.
