If you don't have a macro focus mode or can't get a close-up lens to attach to the front of your camera, basically you can't take close-up photos.
It's not the resoution, it's the optics (i.e. the lens).

I'm not sure about that particular camera, but sometimes there are the following options:
1) macro focus mode - this allows for the lens to focus on items that are closer to the camera than normal.
2) An adapter that fits onto the existing lens and allows for macro shots.
Usually, macro photography is done with an SLR/DSLR and a dedicated macro lens, a normal lens and a reversing ring, or other types of lens modifiers.

When you are taking extreme close-ups, the shutter speed becomes very slow. I'm not sure why. Try using a table top tripod and if it has one, a remote to prevent camera shake even further. You could alway just rest the camera on a table as well.

i agree with the first answer and want to add that you can usually lightly push down on the shutter button without taking the picture and it will focus first.
i've noticed with most digicams that this is the case. Macro lenses are good if you're trying to get VERY close and lots of detail, you might be better off with a telephoto lens.

Well I don't know about that kind of camera. But the best cameras to use are the Digital SLR cameras with a macro lens hooked onto it.

Your camera, if it has a fixed lens, will have an optimum
distance to photograph from.
I would read the book. You can also just experiment a bit.

Use the Macro setting.
In MACRO WIDE you'll be able to focus from 2" to 4".
In MACRO TELE you'll be able to focus from 10" to 28".
Study your Owner's Manual to learn how to use these settings.
