first thing you need to do before you get another dog is to teach your dog that YOU are the alpha male/female NOT him. i would go to a shelter and see how the dog you have now reacts to other dogs. if the reaction is negative at all then take your dog to some training classes so that he can get used to another animal. when your dog and his brother got into these "spats" were they both neutered?

OK, first thing is you have to teach the dog that you are the Alpha male. If not you will have a very hard time training him for anything. The next thing is to remember is that Pits are dog aggressive, may love people but not other dogs. Yours is young so still a puppy which will make it easier.
If you love Pits, as I do, get another Pit.
I have a 4 yr old APBT and a 3 1/2 month old APBT. We went through the aggression thing with the older Pit when my grandson brought the puppy home. The older dog would growl and snap at the puppy. My grandson happened to watch an episode of Dog Whisper where they were training a dog to not go after a rabbit. He used the same thing he saw on our dog to get it used to the puppy, it worked. They are best buddies now.

No dog. If you have an aggressive Pit Bull that runs the roost and prone to aggression he may kill a new puppy.
Pits begin to show their nature, good or bad, as they reach the 1 year mark. You may be better off getting him a muzzle.
Good luck. Aggressive dogs can really have a negative impact on your life. Don't be afraid to put him down if he becomes deadly. After all he's a Pit and the way some "breeders" choose sires is to have dogs fight and the survivor is allowed to breed. Not kidding there. Most people don't realize they have a dog bred for fighting.

I'm completely happy you are inclined to preserve your pit mix on the grounds that he would often be killed on the pound. Pitbulls wish to play difficult so he often performed too difficult for the lab and that is what started the combat. Don't chain up the pitbull. It can be too unsafe for the three 12 months historical child. The majority of canine bites happen when a canine is chained. Maybe that you could construct him an out of doors canine kennel and take him for a lot walks and let him out for supervised play. You have got to neuter both male puppies. It is enormously difficult to teach two intact men to get alongside. Once they're fixed, have you dad support you walk the 2 adult males together in a heel, so no canine walks in front of you. This will aid them bond. Also, have your dad aid you supervise their play. Preserve a long line on the pitbull and maybe use a muzzle to start with. Pitbulls take quite a few work to instruct but in case you are chronic he generally is a well mannered, pleasant canine. Discontinue the play as quickly because it to get loopy or if the pit bull barks, or plays difficult. Have your pitbull lay down except he calms down. Then convey the lab over and let the lab to play once more if he needs. To interrupt up fights you and and your dad will need heavy responsibility gloves, a water hose or bucket of water, a loud air horn and/or dog repellent spray. When a battle begins use water or the air horn to temporarily discontinue the battle and smash eye contact. Have your dad take hold of the pitbull and you can grab the lab.

I think you should get a female American Pit Bull Terrier. My female American Pit Bull Terrier loves other dogs, but her best friend in the world is a male American Pit Bull Terrier. They get along so well. The male is my friends dog, and he doesn't like most other dogs, but he gets along great with my spayed female. You will want to introduce the dogs slowly, and make sure they get along before you decide to keep her. You don't want to leave the dog's together unsupervised, Ever! Especially since your dog has a history of getting into 'spats' with other dogs. But if introduced properly, and kept under supervision, you shouldn't have a problem. And your dog's should become best friends.
You can consider adopting a Pit Bull. MANY pit bulls end up in animal shelters, and they don't get adopted because people are afraid to adopt a dog with the term "pit bull" attached. I adopted my girl from an animal shelter, and she is the best dog I could ever ask for. You can search for a female pit bull in your area on http://www.petfinder.com You will find pit bulls who are available for adoption in animal shelters and rescue groups in your area. Good Luck finding your new family companion!!!
**When looking for a new dog, the shelter volunteers will be able to help you. They temperament test all the dogs that come in, and they will be able to find you a female pit bull who is submissive, and friendly with other dogs. Make sure you introduce them before you adopt her, but I'm sure the rescue group will require this anyways.

I don't think it matters if it's a female or a male dog. Some female dogs can be way more aggressive than males. are you sure they were fighting and weren't playing? i ahve a pit bull and he's really playful but also a real friendly dogs. My boyfriend friend has my dog sister and they would be playing but look like they were fighting. Pit bulls aren't mean dogs like the rep they have. It's all depends on the owner. Pit bulls are actually friendly dogs.

A little scary here with you outlining he is the alpha. Does that mean he is already dog aggressive? If so, consider having 1 dog.
If he is fine with other dogs, definitely go female. I would stick to the same or a smilier type breed. Staffordshire Terrier, Boxer, Bull Terrier, etc. -- If you get a male in any of these types of breeds, look out for some fights.

Well first off your pitt bull should NOT be alpha to anything. If you are the alpha, as you're supposed to be, then your dog should be able to get along with any breed you choose. Before you go looking for a second dog make sure that YOU are the one in charge, or you will have issues. Especially with a pittie. If you are the pack leader to your dogs then they will get along, because there will be no reason for them to fight each other for domination if they already have someone to follow.

Is your pit, dog aggressive? Does he get along well with other animals? If he is not dog aggressive and gets along will with other animals then I would suggest something that is around the same size as him but a female and also not another dominant breed unless you know that it will be submissive to him. One thing I would suggest is going to the local shelter and take him with you and check out the dogs available there. See if there is one that you and he both like and he seems to get along well with. Good luck.

You should be the alpha male not your dog. I think it would be best to get a female and the same breed would be ideal. As long as your dog is well socialized it should get along with any type of dog you decide to get.
