I used to say that the REAL wording behind the acronym for ADD was "Adults Don't Discipline." And with that as my mindset, my oldest child suffered miserably. I verbally beat him into submission -- he didn't REALLY submit, rather he just gave up. We'd been warned of the severe side effects of drugs being prescribed and opted to pull him from public schools and begin various regimens of diets. My wife and I are both well educated and thought ourselves up to the task of home school. He fell behind several grade levels and finally quit at the nineth grade. We put him on Strattera and put him to work. He went through jobs like most people go through underwear. At nineteen, he took himself off the medication and is currently enrolled in Job Corps.
Our youngest son, we held off slightly -- not wanting to jump the gun. School went from being his favorite passtime to being something he absolutely hated and dreaded. So, with the mindset of not witholding medication for a diabetic, we had him tested and medicated. He's in the fourth grade now. He's in the advanced math program, working three grade levels above his fellow class mates and is reading four grade levels above the others. Still, he is teased mercilessly and there is a definite difference in his behavior when he misses his dosage. But clearly, it was and is the right thing for us to do. I now look back at My oldest son's life, my life (and that of my father's) and wonder how things might have been different. My IQ is just below genius and yet, I've always been the geek and underacheiver. My father never graduated from high school. Instead was given a certificate of attendence. He taught himself to read when he was in his forties.
As for videos, they can be made to tell whatever story you wish.

I used to work around kids who were heavily medicated, and at one point, I was one of them. These drugs can cause serious illnesses and effects in the users, some that might never go away.
And it is true. More and more kids are being diagnosed with ADD and ADHD than ever before, and over 95% of these diagnosi are proven false, usually after the subject's death. It is the ultimate combination of ignorance, intolerance, and malpractice.

Its great that some of you can use diets and herbs to treat your ADHD child. It's not possible in all children. I have tried the diets, I have tried the herbal way, I have always been a disciplinary mother, Ive tried no meds. I have tried everything. I have no choice left but to put my child on medication. He is so much happier. He tells me his life is easier when on them. He is not a zombie. He is still a very extremely active boy. I have however recently, taken him off of stimulants and put him on a non-stimulant. It's been hell. He's off the wall, can't concentrate on his school work, is getting into trouble both at home and in school. He hates this. But have asked him to hang in there until it has a chance to work. I don't want to put him back on stimulants. Don't judge others for their method of treatment. Some ADHD children have it severely and there's no choice. We are doing what we can to help our child as you did. You just got lucky and it worked for your child. I wish it did for my son. We are parents just like you and love our children just as much. Don't be critical like that its hurtful and ignorant.

KUDOS to you for 'not' medicating here. We do not medicate our son either. We have lots of structure (which works great) and he needs. Lots of understanding. Kids can be kids if parents 'allow' them to be. The video? I have seen that and cried and cried...so sad. I actually posted that on a adhd website and they took it off. Figures.

I truely believe that ADD/ADHD children need to be treated just like any other child. I think parents like to use it as an excuse for bad behavior, but honestly, that comes back to the parenting.
