i am doing a project for my creative writing class and i am writing a story about the life of a girl in the 1700's. don't tell me to look it up on google trust me i've already tried. I want to make the girl's boyfriend or sister fall into a river and drown. i'm thinking it would be more intresting if it was her boyfriend.

i am just curious because i thought maybe some of the girls just got married and didn't really date, like it was planned by their parents or something.

PLEASE HELP ME!
thanks guys. ;]]

Well they didn't call them boyfriends. They were gentleman caller's, suitors, beau's. They did not date but courted and most socializing was in group settings or chaperons.
In high society many marriages were basically arranged, women were expected to marry and raise the family fortunes. They were also expected to maintain a certain social status.
For regular people it was a little different and I believe more married for love usually. Social rules were a little less ridged and people would socialize with their neighbours with church socials, barn building parties, quilting bees etc.
Not sure I've been much help but good luck with your story.

You can easily research this yourself by looking up social relationships. Do your own work.
