I have a wooden stockade fence, I like the way it looks. I will say the down fall to the wood is that kids in the neighborhood have broken a few of the top parts of the fence off, though that is easily replaced, I'm not sure if you would encounter such a problem with a vinyl fence, though I'd think you then have to replace a whole section should anything break or crack, though it might be under some form of a warranty. Another thing to consider is that wood will require maintence over the years, re-staining every so often, whereas vinyl wouldn't, but the trade off is that wood is cheaper.

Wood is a heck of a lot cheaper, especially if you have a large yard. Vinyl will last a lot longer and you won't have to paint it. We put up a wooden fence this summer and it took about 30 gallons of stain to cover it and it took longer to stain it than to actually put it up. It has also warped in places so it is no longer straight. We have a pretty big yard so we really couldn't afford vinyl. If you can afford it, I'd go for vinyl.

Depends on the area of the country you live in. If you live where termites are a problem- I would go with a vinyl fence. Vinyl fences do get dirty, and have to be washed. (Think patio furniture) Wood has to be repainted every two or three years. Vinyl is more expensive- but- more durable. I personally would choose vinyl. They make it with a wood grain that looks just like painted wood.

lol, I have been staining my wooden fence this week so it's funny you asked.

Wood looks better than vinyl but requires more maintenance. You will never have to stain or weatherproof vinyl.

There is a another one called composite (or something like that). It is wood but has been treated with a vinyl like covering. It is more expensive than wood or vinyl but it looks like wood without all the work.

there are some new vinyl fence products that look a lot like wood & last a long time w/ minimal upkeep. you need to get to the stores to compare products & pricing. my neighbor did her pasture w/ vinyl fencing & it looks pretty good....

wood is nice but after time it will give out. make sure the fence posts are treated before putting them in the ground or they'll rot.

will you be covering the fence w/ landscape plants? if so i would definitely do vinyl since you won't be looking at it anyway.....

wood over time will need to be replace the post last 10-15 yes properly installed, vinyl looks nice very little maint, but is not a strong fence unless you get the type that has wood inside of it.

you will have pepole on both sides of the fence on this (LOL) but you are the one that has to deal with it for a long time so it is what you can afford and you want to have to deal with later.

I install wood for at a rate of 10 to 1 but the wood customers have to keep paying me to paint, treat, repair or replace at a cost that will pay for vinyl in less then 20 year for the average wood fence cost

Vinyl fences are easier to clean, you don't need to paint them (usually) and are generally easier to take care of. Wooden fences are far sturdier, will last longer, won't take weather damage like vinyl, ie Cracking in cold, warping in heat. Aside from the occasional paint job wood would be the way to go in my opinion. It just looks nicer.

..i have a red wood fence 12 yr. also i have green vinyl fence 10 yr , i love both ..choose what ever match with your house and the back ground..wood is more expensive but more valuable

I want to add an important point ; - in either choice
remember to pick a strong post ( the galvanized pipe ) at least 2.375 diameter and 3/16 wall thickness , the depth of the hole ( for the cement ) to be at lest 2 f deep in order to resist the wind .

I would go with the vinyl because it is easier to keep clean and would last alot longer than wood and you have to worry about the panels on the wood fence rotting and breaking and it looks crapy after a couple of years . so if i were you I would go with the vinyl. most costly but yet last longer so better investment. good luck .

Wood - looks real. Is classier. But - avoid the pre-made panels they sell at Lowes because they're cheaply made out of inferior wood. Plus, you have to maintain and paint wooden fences probably at least once every 3-4 years.

Vinyl - looks like you live in a trailer park, but it's practically maintenance free.
