In order for protien to build muscle, does it have to be ingested & absorbed internally? Can it be absorbed by the skin and have the same results? In other words, can a high protien infusion, pack or poultice be put on your skin and have the same effect on your muscles as a high protien meal, drink or supplement. Does it have to be absorbed from the INSIDE OUT or can it go from the OUTSIDE IN? I'm very anxious to learn the answer to this. My aunt has post-polio and I'm trying to figure out how we can maintain the muscle she has left & maybe even build more.

Protein has to be ingested to be used by the body according to its purpose. To explain briefly, protein is not utilized as protein but needs to be broken down. Hydrochloric Acid present in the stomach is one of the requirements to break the protein bond. With hydrochloric acid and gastric enzymes, the protein-containing foods are broken apart, separating out the proteins- which are then broken into their constituent parts called the "amino acids".Digestion of protein continues down the small intestine. The amino acids are then absorbed by the the blood capillaries of the small intestines, then go through the liver, and then go into the blood of the general circulation. The amino acids can then be utilized by the body in building and repairing tissues.

The best help you can do to your aunt is letting her to follow a modified healthy lifestyle practices: consuming a well-balanced diet, exercising in moderation, and have a regular check up.

Folkloric practice encourages, regular exercise and massages on the affected limbs. However, scientific evidences still has a debate over such matter.

The main thing for maintaining muscle is use (exercise). Even a small amount of protein (20g or so a day) is enough to maintain the muscle that you have. I have know idea about absorbing it through the skin, I have never heard of that. I just know that it doesn't matter how much protein you ingest, if the muscle isn't used it will deteriorate.

I don't think you can ingest protein through your skin, and I'm pretty sure you have to get it through a feeding tube or eaten. I'm not sure about the specifics of your aunt's condition, but when my grandmother was dying of cancer we gave her protein shakes with ice cream.
Dietary supplements aren't like a nicotine or birth control patch. They have to be inside your body to get absorbed by your digestive tract.

Orally or via the skin... but that is where the steroid controversy comes in. I hope your Aunt does okay with her Polio. I know that my sister n law had been given streroids when she was stricken with a brain tumor.

Good luck to you and yours!

i don't think you can absorb protein because protein molecules are too large to be absorbed through cells.
