When the adjective "crunchy" is used to describe people, as in "crunchy people", what does it mean?

Thanks!
The expression was in this passage that I stumbled across while reading a novel:
"And every shop was full. Another Santa clanged away with the same bell outside the cheese shop. "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" rattled from a hidden speaker above the sidewalk in front of Mother Earth, where the crunchy people were no doubt still waering their sandals."

I'm American and I've never heard the phrase "crunch people".

If it is used in terms of a person being "earthy-crunchy", then that usually means it is someone who really loves the environment and considers environmental issues to be extremely important. It can also be used to describe hippies, though that is not wholly accurate.

I've heard "crunchy" to describe hippies. I believe it comes from the idea that hippies eat granola cereal (first introduced to the hippie community at Woodstock), which is crunchy. Hippies are sometimes referred to as "granola" types.

It's not a common term. In this piece it means "hippie" or someone with a progressive lifestyle and politics.

It comes form the association of hippies with (no doubt organically-grown, fair trade) granola.

The only thing close to that is used only in the US military. We refer to "Cunchies" as infantry sometimes, because thats the sound they make when a tank rolls over them. Its a joke we use in the military sometimes.

If you mean "crusty" it usually means someone experienced. Someone that has done the job for a while and sometimes set in their way.
