Besides the books of faith, are there any other texts of historical relevance that explicitly mention Jesus Christ and his miracles? Are there any texts by reliable authors/historians that can help us unwind this Jesus thing?

Yes. Read "The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel.

He was an agnostic who set out to prove Christianity was a hoax, and wound up converting instead.

I believe Josephus (Jewish scholar) had alot to say about His authenticity....although I'm not exactly sure what his writings are referred to as (title)
