I think there are a couple of reasons
1. We are the only animal on earth that comprehends the end, and that in turn forces people to find a way to continue after life. They simply cannot deal with the knowledge of life ending.
2. I think the other reason is to help them deal with the daily challenges of life, and require a rule book to guide them.
Now that being said I am not religious however I believe that if this helps people deal with life then they should be religious. I never question a person's religious beliefs and in turn do not want them to lecture me about religion, another words don't try to sell me something I'm not in the market for.
There is only one thing about religion I have a problem with. The fact that it has caused so much death and destruction in the world all because they believe they are on the righteous side of things, this in turn justifies the end in there mind. This usualy is caused by aperson or person's that manipulate the beliefs given to them and sholud never be permitted to fester. Right now the American and British are fighting a group that have a religous belief that what they are doing is right, and we will never be able toconvince them otherwise. So what are our options?

I don't cower in fear. There is freedom in Jesus Christ. I am not afraid of God at all. Therefore, I am not wasting my life. Being a Christian makes me a better person (than I used to be). I have better morals now, I treat people better and have eternal life. What's not to like about that?

What are referring to: the existence of God? I know that people "cower" in fear when talking, thinking about God, because he is the one who has created us, and on the day of judgment he will be the one who decides whether we will be let into heaven or thrown into hell.
Why do u think people waste their life cowering in fear of something that doesn't even exist?

Cowering in fear? Do you mean hell? Oh, no I am not scared of hell. I do not even think of hell that much. I love being a servant of Christ. My life has so much joy in it now. I have been blessed immensely. And if you think I don't have my problems, you are so wrong. Problems seem to come at me like moths to a light. But, I have God and He takes care of me. There is no reason to fear, there is every reason to feel joyful!

Who says that I'm either cowering or missing anything?
Come to think of it, a life of self-discipline, self-control, and moderate restraint means that I'll miss, among other things: obesity, diabetes, liver disease (from too much alcohol), cancer (alcohol & drugs), sexually transmitted diseases (like AIDS), tones of emotional & mental problems that atheists seem to suffer, premature death, years in the nursing home (damage to the body from excesses), and so on.
What can a life of hedonistic excess, and all of the problems that come with it, offer me that come close to the sublime experience of knowing God?
----------------------------------------------------
"It is very difficult to explain this feeling to anyone who is entirely without it. The individual feels the nothingness of human desires and aims and the sublimity and marvelous order which reveal themselves both in nature and the world of thought. He [the experiencer] looks upon individual existence as a sort of prison and wants to experience the universe as a single, significant whole"
--Albert Einstein

In other words, in case I was not clear, you cannot convince a mystic to abandon his faith for the shallow and transient pleasures of the material world. Good luck with beating your head against the proverbial brick wall.

If you're saying that God doesn't exist, you may want to explore that through a philosophy class. It's also a logical fallacy from the start, begging the question - how do you know God doesn't exist? And the burden goes back to you.

1 - Your willing blindness doesn't make the fact that God is real go away.
2 - Those who know him don't need to fear him. Those who don't know him have plenty to fear.
