in spirits? My cousin claims to be an atheist but also believes in spirits. Why would she believe in a spiritual being if she doesn't believe in a god (or some other higher being)?

Just curious and trying to understand.

John & Andrew - If it is so easy to believe in spirits, why is it incomprehensible to believe in a god? That is more to the point. Neither can be completely proven or disproven. And I happen to be Pagan not christian.

because they don't go hand in hand. people have actually gathered much more documentation of ghosts and hauntings than anyone ever has of "god".

atheists understand that we are energy beings, that is, our molecules and atoms contain the energy that animates us and everything around us. and we also understand that energy is neither created nor destroyed and all the energy there is in the universe was present at the big bang. having said all this, some people, including apparently, this atheist cousin of yours, are able to make a plausible case for ghosts and spirits as energy transformation after death. this is nonsense of course as all the evidence for ghosts and spirits is anecdotal, but everyone is entitled to their opinions now aren't they.

No Atheist believes in any such nonsense.

Anyone claiming to believe in 'spirits and ghosts' is in no way an Atheist. Agnostic possibly. Completely batshit crazy, definitely.

She's probably agnostic, like me. I'm ALMOST an atheist but I've experienced supernatural phenomena or at least, things I can't explain that most people would call "ghost activity". I'm not 100% sure they exist but it's still an interesting topic to explore.

People often display a wonderful ability to hold more than two contradictory beliefs at the same time.

Atheism simply means no belief in God(s)

I suppose that it is not unthinkable. However, atheism is not a religion or set of beliefs, it is simple the description of those that do not believe in a god or gods.

You are also an atheist, you just dont realize it. There are a hundred gods to chose from, and you dont believe in 99 of them.
When you realize why you dismiss the other 99, then you will realize why we dismiss yours.

Most atheists I know, myself included, do not believe in the supernatural. Maybe she's not atheist, maybe she's agnostic.
