Tasers have their place as does other forms of restraining subjects! It always comes down to the descretion of the officer in charge of a given situation!.Their decicion has to be swift & without remorse! Obviously because the officers are human they will make judgement calls that won't always be the correct one! Their decisions have to stand up to public scrutiny!
Police forces also find themselves under criticism for their use of force, particularly deadly force, when a police officer of one race kills a suspect of another race. In the United States, such events routinely spark protests and accusations of racism against police.

In the United States since the 1960s, concern over such issues has increasingly weighed upon law enforcement agencies, courts and legislatures at every level of government. Incidents such as the 1965 Watts Riots, the videotaped 1991 beating by Los Angeles Police officers of Rodney King, and the riot following their acquittal has depicted American police as dangerously lacking in appropriate controls. The fact that this trend has occurred contemporaneously with the rise of the US civil rights movement, the "War on Drugs" and a precipitous rise in violent crime from the 1960s to the 1990s has made questions surrounding the role, administration and scope of authority of police specifically and the criminal justice system as a whole increasingly complicated. Police departments and the local governments that oversee them in some jurisdictions have attempted to mitigate some of these issues through community outreach programs and community policing to make the police more accessible to the concerns of local communities; by working to increase hiring diversity; by updating training of police in their responsibilities to the community and under the law; and by increased oversight within the department or by civilian commissions. In cases in which such measures have been lacking or absent, local departments have been compelled by legal action initiated by the US Department of Justice under the 14th Amendment to enter into consent decree settlements to adopt such measures and submit to oversight by the Justice Department.

Some believe that police forces have been responsible for enforcing many bigoted perspectives. Ageism against teens, classism, homophobia, racism, and sexism are views which police have been charged with having held and enforced. Some police organizations are faced with routine accusations of racial profiling.

I am not opposed to the use of the Taser. I think it is WAY better than using a gun that fires bullets, that's for sure. But in certain cases it really is not the thing to use. If there is NO OTHER means of REASONABLE force, you gotta do, what ya gotta do! In the case of the man who was trying to leave the hospital with his baby, I see NO reason to have endangered the baby in such a manner. In some cases they have reacted WAY too quickly thinking that the taser was a lesser weapon than a gun and have wound up harming the person intended to subdue. I think they still need to refine techniques a bit and come up with a couple of better solutions, Like maybe a lower level shock for subduing a 'distraught' individual. Keep it at the higher level for the harder stuff. But then that is still a judgment call, isn't it?

What we see here is a glaring example of a lack of understanding among many, many people. Law enforcement is all about the use of force to impose the will of the government on people to make them comply. This is not a bad thing but it is necessary to understand that.

This is a country of laws. An orderly society is not possible unless we have laws to set boundaries. The judicious use of violence is all we have to enforce those laws.

Even a parking ticket is a form of violence. It forces you to pay money you do not want to pay. Failure to pay the fine will result in an escalation of force, you may have your driving privileges suspended and a warrant issued for your arrest a further escalation of force. The force escalates until you comply. The amount of force necessary to get your compliance is up to you.

The same goes for anyone on the street or anywhere else. An officer telling you to be quiet or to move along or to leave the premises is a kind of violence. Forcing you to do what you do not want to do. How much violence is required to get your compliance is up to you.

In most cases people comply immediately, no more force that the policeman telling you to turn around a put your hands behind your back for handcuffing. Some refuse and are forced to do so. Some still resist and are wrestled to the floor others struggle futher and are pepper sprayed or tasered. Some still don't comply and have blows struck upon thier person. The level of force is determined by the actions of the person being arrested or removed.

Fortunately, many of us never have to experience it. But force is not very pretty to watch. The display seems to injure the delecate senibilities of some people. That just shows how rare the use of force is. It is rarely seen.

I don't know about the USA but here in Ontario, Canada we have a lot of female officers and fairly small men. Gone are the days when the Police Service accepted tall, strong men with just adequate education and accepted no women. Nowadays you can be sure that the officers are well educated and fit but not super beings. When someone has to be arrested, they HAVE to be arrested. Dealing with a violent criminal or any citizen shouldn't have to take a huge old fashioned police officer and neither should the officer have to risk being beaten up. Anything that will equalize the physical difference between a police officer and the offender (who may well be a formers prisoner who has taken weight training in jail) is justified.

I agree...cops should be able to use whatever means they need to bring down criminals..it's their lives on the line.Or else people shouldn't give them a reason to use the tasers if they don't like them. It's the fact no one has any respect for law enforcement any more that makes them need better weapons to defend themselves and can't take any chances with anyone who won't do as they are asked.
We had four police officers ambushed and killed here in Alberta by a paranoid idiot while they were checking out his pot-growing operation. And I know of an incident where they were called to a domestic dispute and the guy came running out the door brandishing a knife ...ready to stab anyone within his reach.
That's the kind of society we have let this world become and I commend each and every officer out there for doing their best to do their job any way they have to.

Have a star. Whether this kid had a right to be there or not is irrelevant. They were the proper authorities for the area, and made a judgement call due to his disruptive behavior.

All of that aside, if the authorities that be are trying to restrain you, and you continue to resist, THEN THEY WARN YOU ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR TAZER USE, and you STILL continue...EXPECT TO BE TAZED!

If anything happens to these officers, then whatever judge steps into that realm has just de-nutted security in events like this.

thunder...so we should take the opinion of a criminal when speaking about cops? Don't think so.

US Veteran...You sound like you have been on the same side of the law as thunder. These people tried several times to restrain this punk AND warned him of the tazer...he got EXACTLY what he deserved.

enigma...WTF are you talking about? The kid was not tazed 10 times. I do not get your point.

because of the fact TASERS are no longer meant for use fairly of weapons. in the event that they have been on a similar point, i wouldn't in any respect use the TASER. TASER isn't an perfect reaction to deadly tension. every physique who makes use of a TASER whilst confronted with a risky risk would be killed. that is not any longer what they're made to do. I write a super type of tickets, and not in any respect TASED every physique on a site visitors supply up. i know that spoiled people who've in no way confronted outcomes for their strikes earlier are bowled over to pay attention this, yet you ought to obey a lawful order from a police officer. whilst human beings get out of control, I ought to hold them back INTO administration. that is area of my job. in case you do no longer choose me to apply a TASER to do it, then i'm going to offer it up. we can bypass back to the days as quickly as we used a Nightstick to subdue human beings (undergo in strategies Rodney King?). If that's what you (the wide-unfold public or community) choose, i'm for it. yet I easily have a feeling you may whinge approximately ANY tension utilized by a police officer. I inform you what. bypass to an Academy, spend 2 or 3 years on the line, and then tell me the thank you to do my job. till then, you have no concept what you're speaking approximately.

They are way past TAZER's where I live. They use 12 gauge shotguns with sandbags instead of pellets. So, let the people cry about tazer's then the cops can have their guns back.

It really hurts to be tased. It's amazingly painful and quite humiliating. Cops should use their tasers only when necessary and never to excess.

I would MUCH rather be tased than be shot however. If people would stop pushing cops to the point of having to use physical force, there would be very few tasings. The cops who abuse their power should be removed from their positions and punished accordingly. If the people believed this was being handled properly, there would probably be a lot less complaints.

Sorry to say we are not even allowed to use harsh language any more. I got written up twice for using curse words with a guy that had tried to escape from the jail and another that was throwing food and plates in the holding cell at the jail.

Both occasions would have been justified in using the Taser to stop them. but, I guess we can't even hurt their feelings anymore.

Eric E: Guess what? We are told to use pepper spray with a verbally abusive subject if they refuse to calm down or remove themselves from the situation. All the cop needs to do is give one warning and afterthat the subject gets sprayed. I guarantee it stops the argument fast.
