The First Amendment says nothing about freedom of language. It speaks of " freedom of speech" the right to speak your mind in a free society. Having said that, there has to be one common thread that unites " bonds" this Country together, speaking a common language is the " key" element.

It still amazes me every time I have to push 1 for English or 2 for Spanish. What about the other some 150 languages spoken in this Country? Why do we cater to the Spanish speaking population and not the rest, even if they are the majority it's still discrimination. So in my opinion, services should be offered in all languages, or in English Only ( the later being preferred)

Neither. They should be encouraged to learn the language. Requiring is a bit much. Governments should offer only the bare minimum of services in other languages. Private business should be free to do whatever they believe is best for business.

English will not become a second language, because the children of immigrants almost universally speak English more than their parents' language, and the grandchildren of immigrants rarely even speak their grandparents' language at all, unless they learn it in school.

Yes, they should be required to if not they should want to on their own. When you have large segment of the population that doesn't conform to the language and rules of its adopted country there is a problems One being your letting in to many to fast that is a bad policy and does cause problem more then just language
If your talking specifically about Mexicans I don't think 2 percent of the population that refuses to speak English will dictate policy.
Census just came out with predictions.
By 2050 total Hispanics will be only 25% of the US popuation if we do no changes our current immigration.

To become a citizen, one must learn English. If a legal immigrant doesn't want to learn English, he will never become a citizen.

To be naturalized one must have the ability to read, write and speak ordinary English unless they are physically unable to do so due to a disability such as being blind or deaf, or suffer from a developmental disability or mental impairment. Those over 50 years old on the date of filing who have lived here for a total of at least 20 years after admission as a permanent resident and those who are over 55 and have been legal permanent residents for at least 15 years are also exempt from this requirement.

If we are referring to illegal aliens, it really doesn't matter. They should just be deported.

I think if people want to live here they should learn our language. This is our country and I am actually getting very upset that we have to conform to so many different cultures and be "politically correct" so we don't offend anyone....well I"M offended! Then they say how terrible Americans are...then don't live here!

USA cannot complain about illegal immigrants!

USA exploit Latin America. USA do not obey the laws of others countries. USA invaded Iraq withou a reason. USA thief the land from the native people. Usa imposes its ideas to the world. The rest of the world is obligated to buy american goods. USA imposes capitalism to the world

I agree Lori K.

No one cares if illegal aliens conform or learn our language. They don't belong in our country in the first place. We just want them deported.

This only applies to LEGAL immigrants. Illegal aliens aren't immigrants in the first place.

It's common sense that they must learn our language, not vice versa.

We have immigrants that speak literally DOZENS of different languages. It would be impossible for Americans to learn each and every language ...DUHHHH.

My mom always told me that there was no such thing as a stupid question. Well, she never came to Yahoo Answers.

THEY ARE COMMING OT THIS COUNTRY! WHY SHOULD WE AHVE TO LEARN THEIR LANGUAGE??
IF THEY WANT TO LIVE HERER THEY NEED TO LEARN ENGLISH. IF I MOVE TO RUSSIA ARE THEY GOING TO LEARN ENGLISH FOR ME? NO! IF I MOVE TO JAPAN IS EVERYONE THER GOING TO LEARN ENGLISH FOR ME? NO!! IF I MOVE TO THE CONGO ARE THEY GOING TO LEARN ENGLISH FOR ME? NO!!! IF I MOVE TO MEXICO ARE THEY GOING TO LEARN ENGLISH FOR ME? HELL NO!!!!

There is a sentence in the US constitution that states that the official language is te language that this document is written in. Or something to that effect.

If they want to come here THEY must adapt to US. Why sould I have to learn their language if they are in MY country?
